Origin of Mo, Meaning of Mo
Origin: The Barrys came from Wales with the Anglo-Norman invasions in 1170. They soon possessed a vast area of Co. Cork. There were so many Barrys that, to distinguish one from the other, they were known as Barry M?r (the Senior), Barry ?g (the Young), Barry Roe (the Red), Barry Maol (the Bald) and Barry Liadir (the Strong). They aquired titles such as Earl of Barrymore and Viscount of Buttevant. This tipperary town got its name from the Norman French 'boutez-en-avant' ('strike forward'), the rallying cry of the Barrys in their many battles. Like so many of the nobility of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Barrys squandered their money, drinking and gambling until most of their splendid houses were gone. A hunting lodge, Fota Island (in the harbour of the City of Cork) remains, taken over by Cork Univerisity. It is beautifully preserved and the furnishings include many Irish paintings.

Origin: The origin of the name Mote may be one of two things, from what I can tell. a) as per Webster's American Dictionary a mote is old French for a small particle of something (i.e. sand, dust etc....) Or b) Mote, which throughout its known history has also been misspelled Motte (which is pronounced the same way) as in a Motte and Bailey: in this form the Motte was the mound on which the Bailey (a fortified tower) was built(also note that the Motte and Bailey was a Norman Construction, not native to the British Isles, but to northern Europe) (also note that the Motte in later years was improved to include a water obstacle, also known as a Motte, Mote, or Moat).

Origin: The origin of the surname Morrissette is in France.%0a%0aThe original French Huguenot Pierre Morriset arrived in America in 1700 and is one of the original settlers of Manakintowne, Va., a Huguenot settlement on the James River. The name Morriset in the area of Virginia gradually changed spellings to Morrisset, Morrisette, Morrissette. In colonial Va. it may even be found as Moracet because spellings were so inconsistent.%0a%0aThe surname is believed to be derived in France from followers of St. Maurice, who became a Christian martyr. The surname Morriset/Morrissette has in its origin the definition 'Little Maurice.' Very little has yet been discovered of the area(s) of France in which the French Morrisets lived.%0a%0aThere have been found Morrissette Huguenot settlers in Australia. There were also Morrissette/Morissette emigrants to Canada, who remained Catholic, while the Huguenot immigrants to this country were, of course, Protestant. The Catholic Canadian Morrisettes migrated to America into the midwest in search of new free lands in the 1800's. Thus there are many of that surname in that part of the country.%0a%0aThe Virginia Morrisets/Morrissettes migrated to West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. Today thereHelen Morrissette Flagg
