Origin: From the research I have accumulated the name Mellor may have originated from a Celtic word, Moel or the Latin, Mollis, which means a smooth, rounded hill. In England there are two villages named Mellor, one near Blackburn, the other south of Manchester. I have also been told that the name may have originated from a man or family named Mel who lived on a mountain or hill i.e., 'Lor'. This may not be correct, but we believe the name is Norman-French, and was transported to the British Isles at the time of William the Conquerer around 1066 A.D. Would love to talk with others who may have more to substantiate these descriptions.

Origin: Today most of the Klemmes in germany live in the area of 'Ostwestfalen', which is near Bielefeld. Maybe 'Klemme' is a placename, meaning a narrow place. Think of the bavarian 'Klamm'. Maybe it comes from Clemens or think of 'in der Klemme sitzen', which means that someone isn?t in a good situation - he has to make a decision, but there is none in sight.

Origin: I'm posting this in response to the great number of inquiries I deal with about the origin and meaning of Meredith. Firstly, contrary to a lot of information I've seen (including the American Websters dictionary), the name has nothing to do with the sea whatsoever. It does not mean 'Guardian of the Sea', Protector of the Sea or any other such combination. The original spelling was Maredudd - pronounced 'Mredeeth'. That's right - there's no mention of the 'E' following the 'M'. In the Welsh language and in English speaking Wales, the accent and stress is always on the Penultimate syllable, the modern pronunciation is therefore - 'Mer-ed'-ith. The incorrect pronunciation that strikes the name outside of the Welsh borders is the one widely accepted in the U.S. and the rest of Britain, which curiously causes 'Merry' to be a suitable shortening?! To those of us who are Welsh it is grating to the ears to say the least to hear our name so mutilated! Other seemingly unrelated but correct pet or short forms of the name are PRIDDY, PREEDY, PREDDY, BEDO, BEDDOES etc. The final element of the original spelling, 'udd' means 'lord'. The same element is present in the ancient form of Griffith i.e. Gruffudd. The first part of the name has often been

Origin: In an in-depth research of such ancient manuscripts as the Domesday Book compiled in 1086 AD by Duke William of Normandy, the Ragman Rolls (1291-1296) collected by King Edward 1st of England, the Curia Regis Rolls, the Pipe Rolls, the Hearth Rolls, parish registers, baptismals, tax records and other ancient documents, researchers found the first record of the name Simpson in Buckinghamshire where they had been seated since ancient times. Confusing to most, we found many different spellings in the archives researched. Although your name, Simpson, occurred in many manuscripts, from time to time the surname was also spelt Simson, Simsoun, Symsoun, Simpsone and these changes in spelling frequently occurred, even between father and son. Obtained from the Library of Hall of Names in London by Eric Simpson.

Origin: Most of us have gotten one of those mail-in heraldry reports that say Kimmel means 'one who gathers caraway seeds.' And Kimmel (actually K?mmel) is the German word for caraway. As a matter of fact, several of the coats-of-arms awarded to K?mmels in public positions in Kassel, Hessen state, Germany, had the caraway plant or a figure holding a caraway plant on them.%0aHowever, the word Kimmel and surname Kimmel evolved separately. Professor Hermann K?mmell's report in the Deutsches Geschlechterbuch (Vol. 66, which offers the lineage for J. Michael Kimmel's ancestors back to Dilmanus Kumel of c.1391 Neuenkerken) cites the research of the then-renowned German genealogist, Dr. Schoener of Marburg. See Website for more information.

Origin: For many years, researchers of the Summitt line seemed to assume the family was of English heritage related to the normal English meaning of 'highest point, part, or elevation' as with the top of a mountain. This view was shattered with the discovery of the German Lutheran heritage of early Summitts in Eastern Tennessee and Central Indiana. These Tennessee and Indiana Lutheran Summitts turned out to be directly related to a Francis Summit who settled in the Tyron County area of North Carolina in the latter part of the 1700s, later to become Lincoln County and then Catawba County. In modern terms, this area is Northwest of Charlotte in the area of the towns of Hickory, Newton, Lincolnton, and Conover and crossed Southwest to Northeast by Interstate 40. Francis Summit and his family was apparently the only Summit family in this community. They were a part of a growing German community in North Carolina settling west of the Catawba River and from all appearances were devoted Lutherans from the beginning. Origin: This surname originated with the Norman/French DeMerle, was changed to Meryell, then Merrill in England shortly after the Norman Conquest. The earliest immigrants to the American Colonies from England were John and Nathaniel Merrill who came to Massachusetts during the early 1630s from Suffolk. John had no sons, so most New England Merrills are descended from Nathaniel.
