Origin: The Scottish surename Mcnair has three possable origines The Macnairs of Ross- Shire are supposed to derived their name from Mac-Iain-uiddir, wich literally means Son of dark-haired john, This eventually evolved to Mac-an- uidhir and was condensed to M'In-nir The Perthshire sept of the name appeared in documents as early as 1370 as Mcnayre, which is explained as M'an-fhuidir, the stranger's son could be another possible derivatove of the name. the latter two names were originaly pranouced Mac-an-ewar. with the dh and fh mute.
