Alexander Mavis my great grandfather was born in Hesket in the forest in 1854, my grandfather was John(Jack) Mavis was born Kirkoswald,Eden Valley, Cumberland. My great grandfather Alexander had a sister called Ann. He was the licensee of the BlackBull public House in Kirkoswald and was a special constable in the Penrith, Cumberland & Westmoreland force. He was involved in the capture of Percy Topliss (The moncled mutineer) reknowned for his activities during the 1st World War. Alexander married Letita Mison from Sketchworth, Cambridgshire. John Mavis married Elizabeth Beeby from Branthwaite, Cockermouth, West Cumberland. Elizabeth Beeby was the daughter of Thomas Beeby and Annie Dixon, Branthwaite.
