Origin of Mar, Meaning of Mar

Origin: It is most commonly believed that the name Marcotte is derived from the French verb 'marcotter.' To 'marcotte' is a technique by which a branch of a tree is made to sprout its own roots before being detached from the mother plant. Such 'marcotting' is a process employed in vineyards, for example. The late Father Jean Marcotte, a Capuchin monk and primary genealogist of the Marcotte families suggested in his Dictionnaire Genealogique des Familles Marcotte that there may also be some link to the name Margot. Father Jean Macotte reported that F?camp archivist Jean LeMaitre (also a Marcotte descendant) notes that a monk named Hughes Margot was sent to King Harold of England, by William the Conqueror to seek a compromise, prior to the Norman invasion of England. The failure of that mission led to the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The relevance of this information is that William the Conqueror (the Duke of Normandy), upon landing in England made his encampment in the friendly territory of the Norman Monks of F?camp, who held land near Hastings (click here or here to view source). According to the midieval historian Robert Wace (writing in the mid 1100s) Hughes Margot was one of these F?camp monks. F?camp, of course, is the city of ancestral oriMichael Erskine

Origin: I'm posting this in response to the great number of inquiries I deal with about the origin and meaning of Meredith. Firstly, contrary to a lot of information I've seen (including the American Websters dictionary), the name has nothing to do with the sea whatsoever. It does not mean 'Guardian of the Sea', Protector of the Sea or any other such combination. The original spelling was Maredudd - pronounced 'Mredeeth'. That's right - there's no mention of the 'E' following the 'M'. In the Welsh language and in English speaking Wales, the accent and stress is always on the Penultimate syllable, the modern pronunciation is therefore - 'Mer-ed'-ith. The incorrect pronunciation that strikes the name outside of the Welsh borders is the one widely accepted in the U.S. and the rest of Britain, which curiously causes 'Merry' to be a suitable shortening?! To those of us who are Welsh it is grating to the ears to say the least to hear our name so mutilated! Other seemingly unrelated but correct pet or short forms of the name are PRIDDY, PREEDY, PREDDY, BEDO, BEDDOES etc. The final element of the original spelling, 'udd' means 'lord'. The same element is present in the ancient form of Griffith i.e. Gruffudd. The first part of the name has often been

Origin: The surname MARSHALL appears to be occupational in origin. Research indicates that it can be associated with the English and Germans. The name was carried to England in the great migration following the Norman Conquest - 1066. Earliset record of the name found in England was in Wiltshire - where Goisfridus Marescal lived in 1084. The name means 'One who cares for horses, especially one who treated their diseases; a blacksmith; an official in a king's or a high noble's household having charge of military affairs'

Origin: There are several ideas or ways in which the name Marcum came into being. Here are a few of the ideas that I have found: 1. According to Don Marcum, he was told by his 90 year old uncle. We were Markhams long ago. James Marcum, Secretary to John Rolfe of Pocahonest was the first Marcum to come to America. This Marcum was in the settlement of James Town, VA (1607) led by Captain John Smith. This was before the May Flower compact (1621). The Marcum became business men and farmers of Virginia. Wilson, sr. family took its name from its land of Markham in Nottingham. Alexander de Markham (Alexander of Markham) was constable of the Castle of Nottingham in the reign of Henry III. From him descended Sir John Markham, Knight Judge of the Common Pleas in the Reigns of Richard II. Henry IV (1396-1407). 2. I have also found that both Marcum and Markham are from the Marcums of Wayne Co, KY. The name was Markham before the County clerks started spelling it phonetically.
