Origin of Mae, Meaning of Mae
Origin: my father is German born from Hannover but his family is originally from the region of Thuringen. There are apparently a large group of Maeder's there. The name is possibly Swedish in origin though (family rumors) but we don't know from when.

Origin of Mae, Meaning of Mae
Origin: The family name of Maestri in the United States has its roots in Italy. The main 'clans' of Maestri come from several villages in Northern Italy named Maestri. These villages were named for the medieval stone masons guild, called the Maestri Campionesi. The origins of the family name of Maestri begin here. In Italian, Maestri means master. In this case, it is an occupational title that refers to a craftsman in this medieval stone masons guild that had completed 10 years of apprenticeship and was promoted to master craftsman. Between 1000 AD and 1400 AD, many of the Northern Italian towns had major cathedrals built by these stone masons, the Maestri Campionesi. These massive stone structures required huge amounts of stone over the 100s of years during their construction. While most of these cathedral towns were in the flatlands along the Po River, the sources of stone were often in the foothills of the Appenine Mountains, separating Northern Italy from Tuscany and points south. Two villages of Maestri, one in Parma and another in Modena are near sources of stone and rock quarries that have existed in these locations for over 1000 years. In the case of the village of Maestri in the Modena province, it is recorded as early as 1519 in the Vignola commune records as 'le Case di Maestri Pietra' [the houses of the stone masters]. Today, the village is simply known as Casa Maestri. The long abandoned sandstone rock quarry, still contains stone and when compared with the stone in nearby castles, fortification towers and stone farmhouses, the mica inclusions are the same or similar to the stone found in the quarry in Casa Maestri. In Parma, the village of Maestri has existed for over 500 years. Located nearby is a major rock quarry that has been worked by the residents of Maestri for 100s of years. Many of the descendants of this village have carried their name to neighboring villages in Parma and ultimately to the United States. In Massa-Carrara, near the famous Carrara marble works, another Villagio di Maestri can be found. Mostly merged into a neighboring village, this hamlet still exists on the main route from Carrara to Pisa and Lucca, site of many medieval stone buildings. In the Trentino, the Maestri Campionesi built one of their most fantastic cathedrals, Duomo di Trento. Within the province, much granite can be found in ancient rock quarries. During the 1200s, the major stone work for the Trento Cathedral was begun. The granite used in this cathedral came from surrounding quarries. Most have long been abandoned, but the family name of Maestri still exists, no doubt a remnant of the stone masons guild that occupied this area for 100s of years. The Maestri Campionesi guild of stone masons were originally from an artistic community located on Lake Lugano in the Northern Italian Lake District. The village of Campione has a long tradition of producting craftsmen and artisans. One such group of stone masons from the medieval Fontana family became the famous Maestri Campionesi. They built 100s of churches and cathedrals in Northern Italy. It was the tradition of the guild members to pass on their skills to their sons and grandsons. This way the art was protected and fostered into the subsequent centuries. Of the 5000 Maestri's living in the early 21st Century, most can trace their lineage back to Italy and to these villages named Maestri for the medival stone masons who occupied the village in such of stone for their building projects. These master craftsmen have left a legacy not only in the stone buildings that they built, but in the descendants of their villages, named Maestri.
