Origin: (received from a Beekman in the Netherlands): surname developed in Holland as a locative name. The name was derived ultimately from the Middle Dutch word 'beke', meaning 'brook' or 'stream'. Thus, the initial bearer of the surname Beekman would have been one who dwelled by a body of water so described. In Holland, this process was not completed until the nineteenth century when those who had not yet adopted surnames were instructed to do so by government decree. The earliest record of this surname dates from 1407 when one 'Henning Bekeman' was a resident of Dorpat. The surname was first brought to North America over 300 years ago.

Origin: Majewski was the surname born by seven major Polish families, which were septs of the clans Dosluga, Jastraebiec, Lew, Labeda, Nalcez, Zadora, and Starykon. The surname Majewski is of toponymic origin, deriving from any of the places in Poland named 'Majewo', so called from the Polish term 'maj' meaning 'May'. Thus, the first bearer of this name was someone who was identified by the members of his community as 'one who came from Majewo', or 'the lord of Majewo'.

Origin: According to J. G. Fucilla (an authority on surnames) the possible origins of the surname is that it is found to be originally classed as a nickname for someone with a defect of the eyes, such as a one eyed man or someone with a squint, so called in Latin 'Malo' meaning as a sickness and 'Ochi' meaning eye.?The Magliocco's are accounted among the ancient Barons and feudal lords of the Kingdom of Naples.? In 1589 Nicola Giacoma Magliocco, Doctor of Laws, claimed the rights of his family to the privileges of the nobility. The Magliocco's also belonged to the noble classes of Frosinone. In 1718 Guilio Magliocco was one of the Priors in the council of the city of Frosinone. There is still a large concentration of Magliocco's to be found in the province of Frosinone to this day. ? The name can also be found in Siracusa (Sicily) in reasonable numbers. The Magliocco's who settled in Ireland are all from the village of Casalattico in the province of Frosinone.

Origin: In Danmark this is the form for 'son of Matthias'. This kind of name-giving was also in use in Schleswig (Northern part of Germany, which was until 1866 integral part of Danmark). Somehow in the 17th or 18th century surname became mandatory, so in that time the male ancestor was called Matthias.

Origin: The Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs agree that the name MacInnes and all of its variants are of ancient and unique origin. The celtic version is closer to Mac Aonghais. During ancient times the Mac Innes clan followed King Colla from Ireland to Dalriada and established themselves there as one of the original clans to settle that part of Scotland from Ireland. They weathered many hardships but the final straw was the Jacobite Rebellion, which split the clan and led to the Highland Clearances. As a result, the clan has been scattered across the United States and Canada, with some contingents in Australia. The various customs and immigration services of the areas where the Scotsmen settled seem to have corrupted the name many times, leaving a wide variety of variants.

Origin: It is said that the name Grier was originally MacGregor, in Scotland, and this particular branch fought with the Campbells, invited the Campbells to a dinner and then killed many of them. The MacGregor lands were taken away, thus they became unlanded outlaws. The name was also taken away, they were kicked out of the country, they went to Ireland and the name became Grierson. It was shortened to Grier some time later- either before or after they emmigrated to the US. This information came from the geneology section of the NYC Library - about 40 years ago.
