It has never been closely identified with any particularly area and is now found mainly in Dublin and many parts of Ulster. Robert Ellison (smythe) of Yorkshire, was listed in the Yorkshire Poll Tax of 1379. Ellis Pigot of Didsbury, Manchester, was listed in the Wills at Chester in the year 1597. Ellis Pollard and Johanna Chapman were married in London 1458. The name was taken early to Scotland by settlers, and John Heles, burgess of Dundee, appears! to be the first on record.
