Origin of Law, Meaning of Law

Origin: This name is a Scottish name drived from two Scottish words, weard and laugh. (law) Weard means 'watch' and Laugh means 'hill'. (We have been called 'Weardlow' many times over the years. A Watch hill was used much as Paul Revere used Old North church. A lookout tower, only it was a hill, many of which are found in Scotland. Wardlaw and Wardlow are very well known in Scottish history and we believe the variance to be an aural misconception and the hearer just wrote down what they thought they heard. You may have been named Wardlaw just because your family lived very near one of these hills.

Origin: The Lawton family name comes from the name of the residence of its first bearers near Cheshire, England, circa 1043-66AD. This from one writer: 'Lautune (anciently called Lauton under Lyme)...was possessed by Godric in the time of [Edward] The Confessor, and became the property of Hugo de Mara... [May also refer] to the neighboring township of Buglawton, which down to a comparatively late period was often simply called Lawton.

Origin: The Lawrence family is one of the most distinguished in America, numbering among its members many who have become famous in the various walks of life. The family is of English ancestry and settled in Lancaster as early as 1150. Record is made of Robert Lawrence, of Lancaster, who distinguished himself at the siege of Acre and was knighted Sir Robert of Ashton Hall. From Robert Lawrence, of Lancaster, England, many of the Lawrences in America trace their origin. The first of this family to settle in New England was John Lawrence, who immigrated to America and located in Watertown, where on February 28, 1636, he purchased land. His descendants are widely scattered throughout the United States.
