Origin of Lai, Meaning of Lai
Origin: Lehrer is a German word meaning teacher. Therefore, the origin must have been occupational. I have traced the family back as far as the seventeenth century (Rhineland , Germany). Lehrer became Lair on 9 July 1799 when Catherine Lehrer signed her last will and testament in Rockingham County, Virginia in the presence of three witnesses. This Anglicizes the German Lehrer to Lair.

Origin: Hickenloopers first came to America from Mittleschlechtbach, Germany in October 1754. The ship 'Peggy' on which Andreas Heckenleib arrived in this country sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, thus many think the name is Dutch. I have been told the name means 'hedge-hopper/thief.' I understand there are still Heckenliables in Germany today. Some Heckenliables ventured through eastern Europe and Russia first, before coming to America. When they arrived they called themselves Heckenlively.

Origin of Lai, Meaning of Lai
Origin: It is said that this name took its origin from a baronial castle near the river Epte, in Normandy; and that this castle had received its name from a devout Englishman who had been a hermit in that neighborhood and suffered martyrdom in the year 884; he was canonized for his virtues and martyrdom, and locally celebrated. The castle received its name only about ten years after his death, and the family were at an early time called St. Clair. There is a railway station near this place, called St. Clere.%0a%0aThe family were of Norse descent, and nearly related to William the Conqueror. In the line of descent stood the Norse prince, Rollo, who came to Normandy and received the province in 912 from King Charles of France. The St. Clairs of the same generation with William were his second cousins in descent from Rollo, and some of these were his first cousins through another connection. Many knights of this blood came with William on his expedition of conquest, there being in his party at least nine of the St. Clair name. There have been many noted St. Clairs in England and Scotland; the name is also found early in Ireland. More than twenty Scotch and at least thirty English families of this name have had grants of arms. The name has reached History of West Virginia

Origin of Lai, Meaning of Lai
Origin: The last name "Laios" is popularly attached to ancient King of Thebes in Greek Mythology, King Laios (or Laius). In Greek mythology, King Laios, or Laios of Thebes was a divine hero and key personage in the Theban founding myth. Son of Labdacus, he was raised by the regent Lycus after the death of his father. Laios married Jocasta or Epicasta, the daughter of Menoeceus, a descendant of the Spartoi. Laios received an oracle from Delphi which told him that he must not have a child with his wife, or the child would kill him. One night, however, Laios was drunk and fathered Oedipus with her. When Oedipus desired to know more about his parentage, he consulted the Delphic Oracle, only to be told that he must not go to his home or he would kill his father and marry his mother. Thinking that he was from Corinth, he set out toward Thebes to avoid this fate. At the road called 'Cleft Way,' he met Laios, who was going to Delphi to consult the oracle because he had received omens indicating that his son might return to kill him. Oedipus refused to defer to the king, although Laios's attendants ordered him to. Being angered, Laios either rolled a chariot wheel over his foot or hit him with his whip, and Oedipus killed Laios and all but one of his attendants. Laios was buried where he died by Damasistratus, the king of Plataea. Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laius
