Origin of Isbell, Meaning of Isbell
Origin: Isbell was a popular girl's name in England from the 1200s-1600s. It is a variation of Elizabeth. The name was always pronounced Isabell, regardless of spelling. The surname was spelled Isabelle in France and England in the earliest times, then around 1300 in England it was the fashion to spell even the girl's name ISBELL (the Spanish version of Isabel), so the family name followed that spelling also. It has been Isbell ever since. It is not usually pronounced like the girl's name anymore, but originally the surname and the girl's name were pronounced with an "a" even though they were not spelled with an "a" for several hundred years. Some descendants of the Isbells have started spelling the name Isabell, Isbill, and other variations in the last 200 years.
