Origin: Although the ancestry can be traced back to the Viking origins of Halfdan the Old, it would appear that the family name of Granville was not actually established until the year 1012; with the marriage of Mauger, the youngest son of The 3rd Duke of Normandy,( Richard the Fearless), to Germaine, heiress to Aubert, the second Earl of Corbeil.%0a%0aTwo generations later, the brothers Robert Fitzhamon and Richard de Granville followed the Conqueror (William the 7th Duke of Normandy) to England and established the family on land in North Cornwall and South Wales. The Buckinghamshire Granvilles are descended from Richard's son Gerard.

Origin: A George Hillegass (circa 1746-1814), who was born in Sinsheim, Baden Germany and migrated with his parents to America. He was the son of Peter Hillegass who was descended from Hans Peter and Anna (Triegel) Hillegass of Sinsheim. George migrated to Fayette County, PA where we see the spelling 'Hillegass'. However around 1787 he moved to what is now Fleming County, KY. It was at that time that the spelling of his surname appeared as 'Hilligoss'. It is not clear why the spelling was changed. However to this day his descendants maintain that spelling.

Origin of Ille, Meaning of Ille
Origin: It is a rare English Matronymic name -- that is, it comes from the name of the mother instead of the father. It is derived from the Germanic female given name Hildegard (Saxon or Norman in origin), comprised of Germanic elements hild = battle, strife + gard = fortress, strength. It is disputed as to whether this surname is Saxon or Norman derived, as the name was used by both, however, the Matronymic nature of the name suggests the former due to the patriarchal societal structure and culture of the Normans.

Origin: The names Somerville and Sommerville appear to be merely variant spellings of the same name, and also to be of local origin. As a surname neither of these forms is at all common, yet a number of persons named Sommerville may be found in West Virginia. It will be noted that the immigrant ancestor of this family had a good number of sons, and there are Sommervilles also in the state whose direct relation to this line seems doubtful. As a name of a place, Somerville is best known in the United States in connection with a city of good size in Massachusetts, one of the suburbs of Boston.
