Origin: Some surnames can have meaning or origins steeped in history. Ours appears to be very straight forward. Czarnik family legend has it that the surname Czarnik is simply a derivative of the Polish word for the colour black. In Polish 'black' is 'czarny'.%0a%0aPlease feel free to contribute any knowledge you have about the meaning of our surname, or it's origins.%0a

Origin: There is a family legend or tradition, called the 'waif' tale, handed down for many generations, and by now at least apochryphal, that a young boy was found wandering somewhere in Wales, and taken in by people who reared him. His name was unknown, but because he was fond of music (then spelled musick), he was given the name 'Musick.

Origin: Hickenloopers first came to America from Mittleschlechtbach, Germany in October 1754. The ship 'Peggy' on which Andreas Heckenleib arrived in this country sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, thus many think the name is Dutch. I have been told the name means 'hedge-hopper/thief.' I understand there are still Heckenliables in Germany today. Some Heckenliables ventured through eastern Europe and Russia first, before coming to America. When they arrived they called themselves Heckenlively.

Origin: The name Akins originated in Scotland and can be found on records dating back to the 14th century. Thought to derive from the place name AKIN (as in Kyle Akin, Dun Akin, etc.)originating from ACAIN the Gaelic form of the name HAKON, a Norse name brought to Scotland by the Vikings who invade the Western Isles in the 10th-13th Centuries. It may also be derived from the Gaelic name Eachin (Hector), meaning 'Horse Lord', it is sometimes spelled Eakins, particularly among those Scots who settled in the province of Ulster, Ireland, begining in the 17th century.

Origin: Oral tradition in my family: Duke of Llewellyn (Wales)was a petty Welsh kinglet & was out shooting with King of England and made a lucky shot with his crossbow & shot a young buck in its second year -- known as a pricket -- & thus Prickett is a nickname. Welsh history does show that Llewelyn the Great united a bunch of the Welsh fiefdoms or whatever, which his son lost to Edward I. This son, however, 1) married the natural daughter of King John of Magna Charta ill-fame. 2)was one of the barons forcing King John to sign!! I have read that Prickett like Pritchett, Prichard, etc derives from the Welsh ap Richard -- ap meaning 'son of.' But I think there's more assumption than certainty or research in that. I personally prefer the romanticism of the Llewelyn story.
