It may be derived from the Gaelic word 'glas' (grey) in which case it would have been ascribed to one who was grey haired or it may be a shortened anglicized form of the surname Mac Gille Glais. The Gaelic prefix 'mac' signifies 'son of', thus indicating the patronymic origin of the name, while gille, from the Gaelic word 'giolla', means young boy, hence, the 'son of the grey lad'. He sprang from the famous Clan Douglas famed in story and song and probably the greatest of all Scottish clans. Volumes have been written concerning the doing of eminent members of the family and a history of Scotland could not be written were the name Douglas omitted.
