Origin: As far as I know this name is Scotch-Irish. I have traced it back with the help of many others to William M Gallegly of Glascow or Perth Scotland who was born in 1740 and married Hannah Garner on June 25, 1764 in Cumberland County, Carlisle, Pennsylvania in the Dutch Reform Church. We think these are the ancestors of all Gallegly's in America now but not sure. I was told that Gallegly in its original Gaelic form which is quite unlike its present form means 'servant of the young warrior'. I would like to know more and am working on that now.

Origin: Earliest records reveal that in 1273 Michael de Gingedale held tenure of land owned by monks of Glastonbury, Somerset that remained in the family until 1664. During this five century period members of the family moved, via the Manor of Garsdon, to Wiltshire and neighbouring counties. Some variation in the spelling of the name occurred, but by the early 17th Century Gingdale, Gyngel, Gyngle and ultimately Gingell were names closely connected with districts where the majority of the family where landowners, farmers and yeomen. Many were Quakers. Kathleen Broughton Gingell

Origin: Galeotti is the plural of galeotto (italian) name given to somebody that carry people and animals on a raft across a body of wather, a ferryman. The name was originated in Tuscany where many marshes, near the litoral, needed to be crossed by sepherds and merchants.
The word galeotto can be found in the "Divina Commedia" by Dante in the litteral sense (l'angel galeotto - the ferryman angel, who transports Dante and Virgil to the island-mountain of Purgatory) and in methaphorical sense (as go between, in regard to Paolo and Francesca - Canto V - Inferno).

Origin: This family is of Scotch origin. The name Dougal was originally Dhu Gal, meaning black stranger. In the early history of Scotland, the clan McDougal owned and ruled all the islands near the western coast of the Highlands. They are said to have been a fierce, stubborn, but courageous and warlike race, and are found in the thirteenth century in opposition to the Crown. 1306 led by McDougal of Lorn, they fought against Robert Bruce in the battle of Methven, and were entirely victorious. At this time Bruce lost to the McDougals the 'Brooch of Lorn,' which was afterward stolen from the headquarters of the clan, but has in recent time been restored. For a few months after this defeat of Bruce, the clan McDougal ruled Scotland; but Bruce, having gathered together, reorganized, and encouraged his defeated, but not conquered troops, crushed and overthrew the clan in battle in Argyleshire. Their numbers were greatly depleted in the engagement; the victor stripped them of their! possessions of land except the district of Lorn; and the clan has never recovered its pristine strength. The Ritchie county, West Virginia, family of the name McDougal is descended from the Scottish clan McDougal.

Origin: Gallagher - Motto: Fidelity is my glory.

Tha Gallaghers, who were one of the principal septs of donegal, are still very numerous there. They claimed absolute senoirity over the Cineal Connail, the royal family of Connall Gulban, son of the great 4th-century King Niall of the Nine Hostages. The translation from Irish for the name, gallchobhair (foreign help), was probably acquired during the 300 years when they were marshalls of the armies of the O'Donnells. There were several notable clerics with the name. Six O'Gallaghers were Bishop of Raphoe in Donegal. Redmond O'Gallagher, was executed by the English for helping the Armada sailors wrecked off Donegal. He was Bishop of Derry. Many Gallaghers left Ireland during the Great Famine of the early 1840's, those surviving the notorious sea cossing to America often became prominent in all walks of life in that country.

Origin: GALLEN[Gail-len] surname for my family is 5965 of 6000 anient Irish surnames, originally coming out of Co. Meath[3 centuries prior to Christ on Earth. to Co. Leix, to Co(s). Mayo and Slig; and, finally stopping between Co(s). Donegal and Tyrone. The tribe of Gallenga is thought to be the origin of the name; but, it could have derived from an area of that name, too. Though, some may disagree - it is a rare name and very pld; with many numerious variations in spelling and origins. My thoughts only - those that are defeated and oppressed; rarely are able to retain their own files and records; as the winner destroys all of those and rewrites the conquered peoples records and History to their own liking and glorification. Glory is never written down in truth; and, the exception is the glory of Our Lord, JESUS CHRIST. There is a legend of a Gallen being changed into a swan by Mother Erin(pre-Druid, goddess[high]; and also that of Gallen of the Dishonored Spear.

Origin of Gal, Meaning of Gal

Origin: Galli is an Italian word meaning 'roosters'. In ancient Roman times, Gaul was a name of a province consisting of present-day France, Belgium, and Switzerland. The Latin name for Gaul was Gallia, literally meaning 'land of the Galli'. At that time, 'Galli' meant 'man of Gaul', to denote a vain person with a fickle characteristic. Interestingly, the Romans used that term as a degratory term associating the Gauls with roosters for their fanatical obsession with fighting as is probably seen in cock-fighting. Another origin of the Gallii surname is probably from when in ancient Rome, there were priests of Cybele who were called 'galli' from newly-conquered Phrygia. They brought the religion of Cybele Magna Mater to Rome, one more religion brought in the Empire out of many others from other conquered provinces. They would practice forms of self-mulitation including castrating themselves as part of their religious ceremonies. Coincidentially, just to the east of Phrygia was the land of Galatia, meaning 'Galli (or Gauls) of the east', its population being Gaulish and Greek. So it is just one aspect out of many behind the history of the first Galli surname.
