Origin: George Henry Stetzel, Sr. married Magdalena Spittler. They lived in Hatten, Alsace where George owned and operated a mill. Two pages from a family bible appear to spell the surname St?tzel, which, by convention of substituting an 'oe' for the umlaut o (?), would be converted to Stoetz

Origin: This surname is a variant of the Fetzner surname, originating in Germany. I was told by my grandfather that the two names split about 8 generations back, but I am uncertain of the reason. Many people with both variants tend to congregate in the Dusseldorf area of Germany and in Bavaria--and the names are pretty rare elsewhere in the country.
