Origin: I have been searching the Deter name and have found it was derived from the name deterich. That Deterich name has been changed to such spellings as Tetter, Detter, Deter, Detter and I would not be surprised if Detrich is not one of those misspelled names. The Deterich I have reference too was a German that arrived in the Mennonite community of Pa. and because of the French and Indian war moved to, and was a German Baptist minister in Washington Co. Md.

Origin: The origin of the surname Morrissette is in France.%0a%0aThe original French Huguenot Pierre Morriset arrived in America in 1700 and is one of the original settlers of Manakintowne, Va., a Huguenot settlement on the James River. The name Morriset in the area of Virginia gradually changed spellings to Morrisset, Morrisette, Morrissette. In colonial Va. it may even be found as Moracet because spellings were so inconsistent.%0a%0aThe surname is believed to be derived in France from followers of St. Maurice, who became a Christian martyr. The surname Morriset/Morrissette has in its origin the definition 'Little Maurice.' Very little has yet been discovered of the area(s) of France in which the French Morrisets lived.%0a%0aThere have been found Morrissette Huguenot settlers in Australia. There were also Morrissette/Morissette emigrants to Canada, who remained Catholic, while the Huguenot immigrants to this country were, of course, Protestant. The Catholic Canadian Morrisettes migrated to America into the midwest in search of new free lands in the 1800's. Thus there are many of that surname in that part of the country.%0a%0aThe Virginia Morrisets/Morrissettes migrated to West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. Origin: In George F. Jones book it says "TTER" means "Dweller on the ETT (river)" or "Dweller in a wattled enclosure."
I have had cnfirmed by three people fom Schweiz, Austria and Baden-Wurttemberg, that Etter means this.
1.) The word Etter comes from the Alemans. It was the name of the Bounds, Fences of her Village. The villages of the Alemans was enclosed by "Palisades" witch was called etter.
Daniel Etter
Schweiz
2.) "Ethymologisches W?rterbuch der deutschen familiennamen" = "Ethymological dictionary of german familynames". according to this book there are 2 possibilities. A: the name based on the old fences (as we already have discussed) B: the name based on the old alemannic word of Etter which means Kinsman.
Alexander Lutz
Austria
3.) ETTER: either is 1) Middle High German "?ter" = village fence,
boundary;
or 2) MHG "etter" = cousin.
ETTERLI(N): Affectionate form for Etter = cousin. Etterli(n) was widely spread in the alemannic region (the -i is typically Swiss). In 1407 there is a Heinzmann ETTERLIN, Vogt (bailiff, administrator) at Istein (L?rrach, near the Swiss border), and in 1441 Anton => ?TTERLI (!), also spelt ETTER- LIN, town scribe in Schaffhausen (Switzerland). Origin: The German family name Goethe is classified as being of nickname origin. Surnames which are derived from a nickname are said to contribute one of the widest and most varied class of family names. This particular category emcompasses many different types of origin. The most obvious are those names which are based on a physical characteristic or personal attribute of the initial barer. In this particular instance, the surname Goethe is derived from the Middle High German "götte, gotte" which literally indiciates "godparent". Thus, this term would have been applied to one who was the godparent of an important person in the community. Alternatively, this surname is of personal name origin, derived from the first name of the father of the initial barer. Here the name indicates "son of Göte", a pet form of first names derived from the Old High German "Got" meaning "God". Variants of the surname include Gotti, Götti, Gotte, Goth,and Göd.

One of the earliest references to this name or to a variant is a record of on Cuonr. der Göthe who appears in documents relating to Villingen in 1329. However, research is of course ongoing and this name may have been documented even earlier then the date indicated above. Hsnsli Gotti is recorded as residing in the Unterbaldingen in 1398. We also read of the marriage of Friedrich Georg Goethe and Anne Elisabeth Lutz (personal note: it was their son who produced George II and Heinrich who were my ancestors who came from Germany to South Carolina) in Frankfurt m Main, Hessen-Nassau, on the 18th of April 1687. Ernst Wilhelm Gienther Goethe, son of Johann Daniel Bernhard Goethe and Auguste Wilhelmine Bohnhardt, was born in Koethen, Anhalt, Fraureuth, Reuss-Aeltere-Linie, Thuringen, on June 22nd, 1839.
