Origin: There are two possible origins for this name. One possibility is 'Descendants of Little Theobald(for which Tibb was a nickname)' and one possibility proposed to me was that they were originally makers of the cloth or scarf worn by a religious leader- known as a tippet. Tibbits is NOT a variant-Tibbits is Lebanese in origin, while Tippet

Origin: The Pettypool names comes from Germany. During the reformation period the Pettypool's were part of the Anabaptist movement in Germany. When the Anabaptist announced that no Ruler was divenely inspired, the Czar of Germany expelled them from the country. They migrated to Northern France and contracted their name to P'Pool to have the french appearance. Later in the mid 1700's they moved to Wales and three brothers sailed to the US and landed in Halifax Co, VA in 1794. This research was conducted by Dr Bruce P'Pool (deceased) from Nashville, TN from 1930's to 1954 when he published the P'Pool history. No longer in print.

Origin: I have been searching the Deter name and have found it was derived from the name deterich. That Deterich name has been changed to such spellings as Tetter, Detter, Deter, Detter and I would not be surprised if Detrich is not one of those misspelled names. The Deterich I have reference too was a German that arrived in the Mennonite community of Pa. and because of the French and Indian war moved to, and was a German Baptist minister in Washington Co. Md.

Origin: The norman name HAMO developed diminutive forms, E.G. Hem-el; Ham-el-in; Ham-el-ot; Ham-on-et. Hamo is derived from the old german Haimo or Haimi meaning ' house' or 'home'. Hamelot, Hamelin, Hamnet were all in general use and give rise to the surnames Hamlet(t), Ham(b)in, Hambley, Hamnet, etc., etc., Shakespear's only son was named HAMNET after one of his godfathers. His character HAMLET, Prince of Denmark bore a different name- the Icelandic AMLOTHI, which appears as AMLETH in Saxo and was turned by English translators into the more familiar HAMLET, HAMLETT, or even HAMNET. Legend has it that HAMLETT THE SALTMAKER arrived in this country from either Denmark or Holland. Cheshire, Northwich, Ellesmere Port, Delemere and Winsford being the main areas for the salt mines. From the General Register it will be found that the majority of HAMLETTs and with the variant spellings, still emerge from that part of the country. However a very large sector became established in Gloucestershire with 'tendrils' in adjoining counties. It is from one of these branches I descend(L.B. Lane nee Hamlett), my family traced back to circa 15thC. Incidentally, the 'B' in the surname would appear quite irrelevant in some cases. One of my most remarkable discoveriRay Hamblett

Origin: The origin of the surname Morrissette is in France.%0a%0aThe original French Huguenot Pierre Morriset arrived in America in 1700 and is one of the original settlers of Manakintowne, Va., a Huguenot settlement on the James River. The name Morriset in the area of Virginia gradually changed spellings to Morrisset, Morrisette, Morrissette. In colonial Va. it may even be found as Moracet because spellings were so inconsistent.%0a%0aThe surname is believed to be derived in France from followers of St. Maurice, who became a Christian martyr. The surname Morriset/Morrissette has in its origin the definition 'Little Maurice.' Very little has yet been discovered of the area(s) of France in which the French Morrisets lived.%0a%0aThere have been found Morrissette Huguenot settlers in Australia. There were also Morrissette/Morissette emigrants to Canada, who remained Catholic, while the Huguenot immigrants to this country were, of course, Protestant. The Catholic Canadian Morrisettes migrated to America into the midwest in search of new free lands in the 1800's. Thus there are many of that surname in that part of the country.%0a%0aThe Virginia Morrisets/Morrissettes migrated to West Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky and Tennessee. Origin: Oral tradition in my family: Duke of Llewellyn (Wales)was a petty Welsh kinglet & was out shooting with King of England and made a lucky shot with his crossbow & shot a young buck in its second year -- known as a pricket -- & thus Prickett is a nickname. Welsh history does show that Llewelyn the Great united a bunch of the Welsh fiefdoms or whatever, which his son lost to Edward I. This son, however, 1) married the natural daughter of King John of Magna Charta ill-fame. 2)was one of the barons forcing King John to sign!! I have read that Prickett like Pritchett, Prichard, etc derives from the Welsh ap Richard -- ap meaning 'son of.' But I think there's more assumption than certainty or research in that. I personally prefer the romanticism of the Llewelyn story.
