Origin: In Danmark this is the form for 'son of Matthias'. This kind of name-giving was also in use in Schleswig (Northern part of Germany, which was until 1866 integral part of Danmark). Somehow in the 17th or 18th century surname became mandatory, so in that time the male ancestor was called Matthias.

Origin: Langnau IE, Switzerland in late 1400's took the surname Gysi. This surname was based upon his occupation of being a whipper in those days a whipper was called a Gyseler. But Arst Gysi did not want this name because his brother had already taken it so he decided to be original and still base his name on his occupation but however change the spelling from gyseler to Gysi - Gysi was a whipper or chaser of wild dogs from the town as his brother and father were also, this name today in some places is spelt Geesey
