Origin: I researched the name 'Pickering' several years ago at my local library. The particular article said the name Pickering may have evolved from people called 'Pickeringus'. Its meaning was, "People who live on the edge of the pointed hill." I laughed when I read this because I imagined the filthy peasant characters from Monty Python and the Holy Grail running down the pointed hill from their huts and pillaging unfortunate travellers on the road below.
