John Bane, born June 1, 1825 in Franklin County,Alabama and died Dec 19, 1916. At the age of 14 he left home and went to Tishomingo County, Mississippi where he later married Sarah Kinningham on Sept 14, 1848.He was supposed to have at least 2 other brothers. One was named Dave or David. The other name is unknown. One of the brothers supposedly went north and the other went toward Texas. Johns family came from Alabama, N.Carolina and Scotland. My great grandfather Timothy Baldwin came here from Ireland in the mid 1800s. His wife, Elizabeth Erickson, was from Norway. They lived in the Ridgeway-Dodgeville area about 1863, where three children were born: Thomas, Edward and Mary. Edward was my grandfather. He married Margaret Smith of Almond, Wisc. They came to Bayfield where he ran a blind pig during prohibition. My father, Maurice Anthony Baldwin, inherited the bar. It has been Morty's since the early 30s -- and still is. |

I have traced the family back to 1515, Ololus Custer, Kaldenkirchen, Germany. The Custer family apparently starts there. No one has come up with a Custer ancester older than that. John and Susannah Custer descendants. They were the first Mercer County (Custer) settlers. John and Susannah's son Peter. Peter had a son named Joseph. Joseph had a son named James S. James S. had a son named Albert. Albert had a son named Elba. Elba had a son named Rolland. And I am Rolland's daughter.
