Johnas/Johan/John Thomsen Family of Nebraska
my great grandfather, John/Jonas Heinrich Thomsen came to this country in the early 1900's from Germany. His date of birth is January 24, 1857 in Witbeckfield, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and he died December 10, 1937 in Winside, NE. He is buried at Valley View Cemetery in rural, Persia, IA. He was married to Margarethe Hansen in 1879 in Germany. She died in Germany in 1901 and is buried there. They had 8 children: Christine, Alvina, Hans, Margaretha, Mathilde, Johanna, Peter and Emma. They all entered this country through Ellis Island and their destination was Fritz Thomsen (brother of John)in Persia, IA. family of Nico Bohm. He was born in Germany July 20, 1882 and was killed in a farming accident by Winside, Nebraska March 29, 1946. He had one sister, Lucie Bohm Nissen that lived in Minnesota. My Family Tree
Springweiler, originates in the town of Springweiler, which was located near Idar-Oberstein in Germany. A weiler is a small town, or village. Springweiler would imply that it was a small town located at a spring. I've also seen the name spelled as Sprengweiler. The village died out of the plague around the 1400 or 1500s and the people moved away. I have heard that for awhile they were called von Springweiler because they were from the town of Springweiler. There are very few people with this last name, both in Germany and abroad. My father was born in Idar-Oberstein near where the original village was supposed to have been, and there are still some people named Springweiler left in Idar-Oberstein. I have found only three famous Springweilers in history. One was Max Springweiler, who was an adventurer and pilot. He also was the director of the Chinese-American Civil Air Transport from 1951 until 1962. He wrote a book about his exploits as a pilot, called Flugpionier in China (Flight pioneer in China). Then there's a Phillip W. Springweiler who was a delegate to New York state constitutional convention, 30th District. The other famous Springweiler was Erwin F. Springweiler, who was an artist and sulptor, and amongst other things sculptured the original of Billy Mitchell's Special Congressional Medal of Honor. My paternal grandmother is Maria Huels of Castrop-Rauxel, Germany. As far as I know she had two brothers both of which are MIA in Russia during the Second World War. My maternal grandmother is Amalie Roth, whose mother is a born Schindler, and (again, as far as I know) a second or third cousin to Oskar Schindler. My maternal grandfather is Bernard Flaetgen. During the 3rd Reich (the Nazi era), people were required to have their family trees to prove if they were aryan or non-aryan if they wanted to apply for a government position or military service.
