my great grandfather, John/Jonas Heinrich Thomsen came to this country in the early 1900's from Germany. His date of birth is January 24, 1857 in Witbeckfield, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and he died December 10, 1937 in Winside, NE. He is buried at Valley View Cemetery in rural, Persia, IA. He was married to Margarethe Hansen in 1879 in Germany. She died in Germany in 1901 and is buried there. They had 8 children: Christine, Alvina, Hans, Margaretha, Mathilde, Johanna, Peter and Emma. They all entered this country through Ellis Island and their destination was Fritz Thomsen (brother of John)in Persia, IA. family of Nico Bohm. He was born in Germany July 20, 1882 and was killed in a farming accident by Winside, Nebraska March 29, 1946. He had one sister, Lucie Bohm Nissen that lived in Minnesota. They had 7 children: Wilhelmine, Augusta, Frederick, Ernestine,Mary, William and August. Charles Gotlieb ULRICH (1839-1913) was born in Hammermuchle,Germany and died in Dewitt, Nebraska. BALCH FAMILY from ENGLAND to CANADA
The family of James Balch (b.1845) came to Canada by ship in 1909 - that is, his wife Sarah and children came without him to the new world. James' son, also James (b. 1879) met and married his wife Alice Margaret Scattergood in Canada, and that is the beginning of the London, Ontario Balch family. James (b.1879) had a brother George who settled in Toronto and had family, some of whom now live in British Columbia, and a sister Mildred (Stone) settled in the Vancouver, BC area and also had family. One brother of James (b.1879), namely John William Balch, b. Sept. 5, 1881 in Caterham, Surrey, who married Queenie QUELCH, did not come to Canada. He became a butcher, and died before 1965. Nothing is known of this family except that there was a son Morris born about 1910 in England. This is our lost branch. James (b.1845) came from a large family,(Mary Anne, Patience, Jane, Emily, Linford George, Clara, and Arthur) all of whom were born in Caterham, Surrey. Linford Balch, a brother of James b.1853 has an extensive family still in England. The Balch family tended to be tailors, and later also butchers (introduced by the Bryant family). The oldest Balch we can safely claim heir to was James Balch b. 1815 and baptised in St. Martin's in the Field (London, England). He became a tailor in Downing Street and moved to Caterham in 1834. There he married Betsy Bryant, daughter of Henry Bryant and Patience Roffey (or Roffe). |

my Great Grandfather Alex Welcome. He was b. March 17, 1894 in Finland. During the Civil war between Finland and Russia, Alex came to America. We are unsure if he came with a brother or followed his brother to America. They/He came to America in Abt. 1907-1908 they ported in New Yorks Ellis Island. When they arrived, Alex's Name was change to Welcome. Alex and his brother traveled to Canada where they worked as Loggers. When they had a falling out, Alex came back into America and Settled in Aiken County, Minnesota. Alex's Father's first name was Francis and his Mother's Given name was Josephine Alajoki. |

Olson(originally Olsson in Sweden) family, two of whom reportedly left Goteborg, Sweden, August 1895. They entered the US through Ellis Island. Their original surname was Olsson, but was changed to Olson during immigration. The elder sister's name was Alma Olivia. The younger sister's, my grandmother, name was Anna Ellida. Anna was 12, and Alma was 22 at the time of immigration. They were from the Island of Gotland and the parish of V?te. The two sisters were sponsored by elder siblings, Hilda Henrietta, Ingeborg Amanda and Olof. They settled in the Chicago area. Anna's first job was at Western Electric. Hilda was supposed to be an opera singer around the Chicago area, perhaps in Pullman. Ole was supposed to have farmed in Alabama. Ole wife's name was Betsy, who hated the warmer climates and stayed around Chicago, with her sisters-in-law. Betsy was also a mid-wife. Anna's date of birth was Oct. 11, 1882, her date of death was Sept.7, 1971. Alma Olson (my great-aunt) married a John Olson, and they had two sons, John and Henry. Anna Olson married Nels Christian Sorensen August 9, 1909 in Chicago. Anna Olson Sorensen and Nels Christian Sorensen had five children, Marion, Violet, Earl, Pearl and Estelle.
