Origin of Edge, Meaning of Edge
Origin: The name Routledge is a place name based on old Anglican words. Its origins come from the words Rudd (variant Redd) and Loec (variants Lache and Leche) i.e. Ruddlache which means red stream.
In the 15th centrury the Routledges are found across disputed land between the Scots and English Border. On the present day map their is a Routledge Burn in Kershope Forest less than 1 mile from the current Scottish border.
Name variants include DeRoutluge from Norman times, from the middle ages and onwards Routledge becomes the main spelling, later on an 'o' is dropped becoming Rutledge also an extra 't' is added becoming Ruttledge (this last spelling variant appears to come exclusively from Ireland).
