Origin: Brodbeck means 'bread-baker' (contrary to the pastry-baker). The Brodbeck family originates in the area of Stuttgart/W?rttemberg where it is mentioned in the 15th century. Later on the family spread all over W?rttemberg. A branch lived in the village of Neuhausen an der Erms where there are still members alive.

Origin: Hickenloopers first came to America from Mittleschlechtbach, Germany in October 1754. The ship 'Peggy' on which Andreas Heckenleib arrived in this country sailed from Rotterdam, Holland, thus many think the name is Dutch. I have been told the name means 'hedge-hopper/thief.' I understand there are still Heckenliables in Germany today. Some Heckenliables ventured through eastern Europe and Russia first, before coming to America. When they arrived they called themselves Heckenlively.

Origin: I am trying to find out more on this surname myself. However the variant Brackenridge comes from Scotland. This def. came from a book. Dweller at fern ridge or hill, one who came from the lands of Brackenrig (ridge overgrown with bracken) in the old Barony of Avondale, in Lanarkshire. This was for my own use and I didn't write down the source.

Origin of Eck, Meaning of Eck
Origin: The original surname was 'TEN BROECK', attributed to the first in this family to arrive in this country in 1626. His name was Wessel ten Broeck. After several generations, the name began to change; mostly in spelling, the pronounciation and sound is pretty much the same. 'Ten BROECK' means 'from the marsh/bog'. 'ten' in its truest form is 'tot den' which is a descriiptive prefix to a Dutch name. It is most commonly used in its abbreviated form, 'ten.' 'Nederland' (i.e. Holland / Netherlands) is a lowland area that was very marshy and full of bogs. The surname is a description of 'Wessel' who came from the marshy lowlands.

Origin: The Hackbarth surname has it's origins in Germany. More specifically, it seems to have originated from what was the Pomeranian region of Germany/Prussia. Now the region formerly known as Pomerania is split by the Oder River, with it's western half remaining part of Germany, but the eastern half becoming part of Poland.

Origin of Eck, Meaning of Eck
Origin: Sir Hugh de Malebisse, from whom all the Beckwiths trace their origin, was a native of Normandy and accompanied William the Conqueror to England, where for his services he received grants of land. Among his descendants was Sir Hercules de Malebisse, who in 1226 married Lady Dame Beckwith Bruce, daughter of Sir William Bruce, Lord of Uglebarby, which lordship and other lands he had inherited from his ancestor, Sir Robert Bruce, of Skelton Castle, the progenitor of the royal Bruces of Scotland. It is from this marriage that the Beckwiths derive their name, Lady Beckwith Bruce possessing by inheritance an estate or manor called 'Beckwith,' in the old Anglo-Saxon 'Beckworth,' from 'Beck,' a brook, and 'Worth,' an estate. With a view, evidently, to the perpetuation of the name, her husband was required, by a marriage contract dated 1226, to assume the name of Beckwith. The coat-of-arms of the Beckwiths is as follows: Arms: Argent, a chevron gules fretty or, between three ! hinds' heads erased, of the second. On a chief engrailed gules a saltier engrailed between two roses or, in pale, and on a chief joined to the dexter and sinister sides a demi fleur-de-lis paleways or. Crest: An antelope proper, in mouth a branch vert. Motto: Jouir en bienHistory of West Virginia

Origin: A parish in Ayrshire, Scotland. The etymology of the name may be found in the Gaelic Ach, an elevation, a mound, or round hill, generally level at the top; and leac, a flat stone, a tombstone. In several parts of Ayrshire may be traced the remains of cairns, encampments, and Druidical circles. Auchinleck appears to have been one of those places where the ancient Celts and Druids held conventions, celebrated their festivals, and performed acts of worship.
