Origin of Ear, Meaning of Ear
Origin: This is taken from a book entitled Scottish Surnames,1995, published by Harper Collins. Kinnear - In the reign of Malcolm IV (1153 - 65) a family of Norman origin was established in the north of Fife as vassals of the priory of St Andrews; the head of the family took his surname from the lands of Kinnear (probably Gaelic - caenn iar - 'west headland')now represented on the map only by a farm name. By 1296 Sir John de Kyner was important enough to have his name included in the Ragman Roll. Henry Kinnear of that Ilk was appointed commendator of Balmerino Abbey in 1574, and by this time the family had the lucrative monopoly of ferry crossings of the Tay at what is now Newport. George Kinnear was and Edinburgh banker in the early 19th century whose lovely wife was painted by Raeburn. The name, now found all over Scotland, may tend to be confused with Kinnaird.

Origin: The name puryear and its variants are originally Hebrew or Egyptian. The name Puryear is a variant of the Purryer, which is a varinat of Purrier and Perrier. The name comes Periou the younger son Budic, Count of Cornouailles, Brittany France (Referance: the book 'The Norman People' Genealogical Pub. Co. Inc.) and (Bloobline of the Holy Grail by Laurence Gardner) The name traced to Parar the Gr.-Gr.-Gr.-Great Grandson of Joseph of Arimathea, who is traced to Moses who was most likely the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten . Akhenatens physical form indicates a possible human - extraterrestrial orgin. ( Peri - a supernatural being in Persian folklore descended from fallen angels and excluded from paradise until penance is accomplished. Webster's New Collegiate Dictionary 1973.) Michael D. Origin: My uncle, William Henry Searles (1837-1921) wrote of the Searles name: 'The origin of the line - Searle - in England is Norman, and the earliest mention of the name is SERL, a monk of Tewkesbury, who afterward became Chaplain to William the Conqueror and was appointed Chaplain to the King, then Abbott of Gloucester in the year AD 1084. King William 'kept his Christmas' with SERL in the monastery of Tewkesbury. 'The 'Hundred Rolls' for various counties of England, and the State Papers of Great Britain make mention of Searle families resident in the various counties, as Dignitaries of the Church of England, and occupants of the Manor Lands, Officers in the Military, Naval and Civil Services, and yeomen farming the Church and Manor lands, all in the 11th Century, and down to the present. 'The crest suggests our branch belonged to the church and not to the military.' I do not know the source of his information. Many of my ancestors were Methodist Episcopal ministers in the 1830-1900 period.

Origin of Ear, Meaning of Ear
Origin: There are Irish Foxes and Cambro-Norman Foxes in Ireland. The origins of the Irish Fox name are commonly believed to originate with 11th century Tadhg 'The Fox' O'Catharnaigh, chief of Teathbha (or Teffia), who was apparently clever 'like a fox' in battle as well as in acquiring land. Several Irish annals point to a different story - that in the year 1024 'the men of Teathbha' killed Ireland's chief poet/historian of that era - and that they in turn were killed and left unburied, afterwards acquiring a foul odor. Another version has the killer or killers remaining alive after their evil deed, but forever after carried a foul odor with them (divine retribution). The odor was similar to that of a fox, which has a scent similar to that of a skunk.%0a%0aThis unfortunate story does not carry any more credibility than the first story simply because, in a time period when people might easily change their names to suit their purposes, it is hard to believe subsequent generations would CHOOSE to perpetuate a surname which had socially negative connotations.%0a%0aFor more on the Fox name and Fox history, as well as background to the Cambro-Norman Foxes, see Fox Clan website at the link directly above.

She had a son (my father) named Francis Xavier Cavanaugh in 1921. She separated from her husband in 1935 and moved (I think) back to Paterson, New Jersey. Origin: It is a rare English Matronymic name -- that is, it comes from the name of the mother instead of the father. It is derived from the Germanic female given name Hildegard (Saxon or Norman in origin), comprised of Germanic elements hild = battle, strife + gard = fortress, strength. It is disputed as to whether this surname is Saxon or Norman derived, as the name was used by both, however, the Matronymic nature of the name suggests the former due to the patriarchal societal structure and culture of the Normans.
