Origin of Don, Meaning of Don
Origin: According to 'The Surnames of Ireland' by MacLysaght: MacDonagh--Mac Donnchadha (son of Donagh) A branch of the McDermots of Connacht where the name is very numerous. In Connemara the name is usually that of a branch of the O'Flahertys. The MacDonagh sept in Co.Cork were a branch of the MacCarthys; the name is now rare there and apparently many of these resumed the name MacCarthy.

Origin: Donnachaidh is one of the oldest Scottish clans, arriving in Scotland from Irish Picts anywhere from 40-90 AD. My particular surname, Donachy, I have been told is a 'hideout' name members of the clan took after Culloden in 1746. Being a Highland Clan, we were not on the winning side that day. Go to www.tartans.com for a good overview history. The clan is listed under the great hall. It's also known as Clan Robertson. I'm sure what I'm telling you, you already know about. If any info on the name Donachy could be shared, I'd greatly appreciate it. There's not too many of us :)

Origin: Many years ago I was in contact with an executive of the Bryan Donkin Company in England. Among the information he sent me was a large family tree (in my father's possession, I should be receiving a copy shortly)and a brief history of the family. He told me that tradition had it that the family namesake was originally part of the Spanish Armada that came to conquer England. As the Armada sailed against the currents, they apparently crashed and those on board came ashore in Ireland and later moved into England. He also said that tradition was that the name had been Anglosized to Donkin from Donkina (pronounced Don keen nah).

Origin of Don, Meaning of Don
Origin: The name Stapelton (as it was invariably spelt before Richard the Second?s time) is Anglo-Saxon. It means a 'trading village;' 'stapel,' a pile or heap, denoting a place where goods were collected and stored for sale?Dr. Johnson defines it, a 'mart or emporium'?and 'tun,' an inclosure or town. It was appropriate to a village like Stapelton, conveniently situated for commerce, on the border-line between the two provinces of Deira and Bernicia, at a point where the river was passable. But the term 'stapel,' or 'staple,' has long since lost its former signification. From being first applied to the place where goods were sold, it was next given to the merchandise sold there, and is now usually understood to mean the product for which the place is best known. The 'tun' was surrounded by an earthen mound tipped with a stockade or quickset hedge, with a ditch outside, and each township was thus a ready-made fortress in time of war.

Origin: From Amadan, a numskull, a simpleton; may be so called by way of antiphrasis, because he was wise; as Ptolemy received the surname Philadelphus (from the Greek ??, a lover or friend, and ??, a brother), because he charged two of his brothers with forming designs against his life, and then caused them to be destroyed.
