Origin: DAUGHETY appears to be a variant of the English DOUGHTY/DAUGHTY meaning loyal, strong and trustworthy,and the phonetically identical DOTY is the more common variant. Frances Daughty was born in England and was a Puritan minister in NY in the 1600's. His descendants were in VA and the Carolinas in the 1700's. Most DAUGHETY families presently are found in NC, and Lenoir County, NC has the largest number.

Origin: Daum - form the German for thumb, daumen. I read in a Sunday Parade Magazine in the 70's that Daum comes from a 10/11 century German Emporor who was known for using thumb screws--daumenschrauben.

Origin: The name Daber comes from the word "Dauber" which is the german term for a Cooper. A "Daube" is one of the many pieces of skillfully shaped timber used to make a Wine Barrel.

Origin: More specifically, Cooper is the English name for the craftsperson who shapes the timber for the barrels. The Metal rings are crafted by a Blacksmith. The German connection to this Trade is in the name Dauber. Not sure how Italian comes into it.
