Charles Leach
Description: I'm looking for the parents and siblings of Thomas Purcell, who is the first known person in our Purcell family. Thomas was born January 29, 1796 in Hardin Co, Kentucky. He married Rebecca Riggins June 7, 1812, in Hardin Co. Rebecca was born February 4, 1796. Thomas died in 1847 and Rebecca died in 1851.
Hardin Co was formed in 1793 from Nelson Co (Nelson was formed in 1785 from Jefferson Co, which was formed from Kentucky Co, VA in 1780). The county seat is Elizabethtown. Hardin Co is the parent county for several counties: 1799 - Ohio Co; 1800 - Breckinridge Co; and 1810 - Grayson Co. Thomas appears in the 1820 Breckenridge Co census, and it is thought that he moved his family to Grayson Co before 1830.
Thomas and Rebecca had five children: Warren, born Aug 5, 1820; James Roderick, born September 7, 1822; Mary L., born December 30, 1827; Charles, born 1830; and Eliza M., born about 1837. - We don't know where Thomas' father came from, but he probably moved to KY about 1780 to 1795 and settled in a village on the banks of the Ohio River named Shippingsport.
