He ran away from home and was able to pass as white; He joined the Merchant Marine and lived in Brazil with a Family named Jofar. After he returned to America and rejoined his family he told them that Davis was a Slave name and his free name was Jofar. He would never use that name again he was not a slave to any Man, His father did not like this and there were many family arguments about it. Samuel Jofar married Ella Pierman my Grandmother she was Born 1884 in Lynchburg, Virginia the Jofar & Davis family arrived in Phoenix, Arizona about 1915 Just before the Birth of my Mother Wyona Jofar-Beasley. Samuel Jofar Became one of the 1st Black Doctor's in the state of Arizona He was a Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine His Office was located near 11th Street & Washington in Phoenix, Arizona He was also a Barber And I still can remember my 1st hair cut as a child. Richard & Mary Davis are buried at Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona Samuel & Ella Jofar are buried at Greenwood Cemetery in Phoenix, Arizona The Children of Samuel & Ella Jofar are: Wyona L. InterneTree: Frederick Stuart Atkinson On the McKinnon, Stuart and Scottish Clans sides, the heritage of Mary Queen of Scott's and the Battle of Culloden Moor and have deeply affected our Scotch family history. Because of religious persecution, battles and wars, our Scotch ancestors ended up hastily leaving Scotland, from The Isle Of Skye, on the Ark and Dove and immigrated to Prince Edward Island. The Atkinson Family Tree ancestors emigrated from Europe (England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland, Holland, France and Germany, Italy, Switzerland). Others came from Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York and Pennsylvania in particular. This is not unusual because the Maritime Provinces were a haven for those loyal to the British Crown and setters were promised substantial land grants from the British government to move to the Maritimes after the expulsion of the Acadians. It is interesting to note that our family also includes Iroquois and/or Micmac Native American women marrying at least two separate ancestors in the US and Nova Scotia. Another ancestor came to Duxbury MA area in the 1621, on the ship that came after the Mayflower called the Fortune. On the Atkinson side, my grandfathers 5th great grandfather Benjamin Allen left New England and fought in the French and Indian War on the British side in Nova Scotia. He was badly wounded losing a leg, was discharged and sent back to New England, settling and starting a family in Kingston, MA. He later went back to Halifax, NS and joined in the ill-fated Eddy Rebellion, and after the Eddy Rebellion failed, he became a wanted man. He eventually joined the Tories in Nova Scotia during the American Revolutionary War. He would have been hung as a traitor if he returned to his home and family in Kingston, MA. We are also descended from Col. Hezekiah King and Col. Benoni Danks who were infamous participants in the Eddy Rebellion. On the Atkinson side we are related to Presidents John Adams, Samuel Adams and William Howard Taft, Poets Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Ralph Waldo Emerson, Betty Ford and singer Ann Murray to name a few. They were both orphans and came to stay with their Uncle Thomas Hastings in Norwich Twp., Oxford County, Ontario, Canada. Joseph married Maryette Lossing. my mother's maternal ancestors, the Ford family in Zorra Twp., Oxford County, Ontario which I can take back to Justus the father of Chancy. Chancy was born in 1825 in the U.S. Justus was on the 1830 New York Census in Somerset Twp., Niagara County. my dad's maternal ancestors, the McEachern family in Grey County who first settled in Glenelg and moved North to Keppel. John McEachern who was born in 1849 on the Atlantic Ocean en route from Scotland. John's parents as Alexander MacEachern and Jannett McIntyre. Nellie (VAN EVERY - EIGHMEY), CEASE, PETERSON, BOLL. She was the illegitimate child of Adella (WRIGHT) SHELTERS, TAFT, born in Jamestown, NY, on May 01, 1876. After Nellie's birth, she was given to Adella's older sister and her husband to raise. Lucy R.(WRIGHT) and Peter EIGHMEY. In March of 1898, seven months pregnant, Nellie marries Adelbert CEASE. She was 21, he was 46. Two months after they married, their first child was born. Six months after that, a second child was born...only to live for 2 days. In September of 1901, Nellie gave birth to a daughter. Shortly after the birth of their daughter, Nellie was sent to either a prison, or an asylum, for a period of 12 years.
