The Wilson's and Pierce's of Powell Valley, Tennessee
The Wilson family originally came from Smyth County, Virginia. Then in the 1850's moved to the Powell Valley area of Tennesse, in what was then the Speedwell/ Sharps Chapel area of Tennessee. The Pierce family records show that Pierce's have lived in the Union County/ Powell Valley area since the late 1700's, originally coming from North Carolina and Virginia. Many of the families that settled along the Powell Valley area were large, and extended families. They had endured hardships from the elements, from sickness, and had survived hunger, by sheer determination, and flourished, till forced to move because of the construction of the Norris Dam, which caused flooding of the homesteads that had taken generations of work to build and make prosperous. Throughout the records you will find married to the Wilson's and Pierce's other families that lived locally, like Braden, Asmus, Brantley, Boruff, Barton, Beeler, Smith, Williamson, Ellison, and so many of the 'First Families of the Valley'.I create this as a tribute to my mother Ruth Wilson Brantley Pierce, and my father , Henry Clay Pierce who loved their family, their mountains, their valley, and their memories of the people and the history of this little Tennessee community they held so dearBrenda Sue Adamson |
