Origin of Bee, Meaning of Bee

Origin: (received from a Beekman in the Netherlands): surname developed in Holland as a locative name. The name was derived ultimately from the Middle Dutch word 'beke', meaning 'brook' or 'stream'. Thus, the initial bearer of the surname Beekman would have been one who dwelled by a body of water so described. In Holland, this process was not completed until the nineteenth century when those who had not yet adopted surnames were instructed to do so by government decree. The earliest record of this surname dates from 1407 when one 'Henning Bekeman' was a resident of Dorpat. The surname was first brought to North America over 300 years ago.

Origin: English :occupational name for medieval court official, from Middle English bedele (Old English bydel, reinforced by Old French bedel). The word is of Germanic origin, and akin to the Old English b?odan to bid, command and to the Old High German bodo, messenger. (See BOTHA).In the Middle Ages a beadle in England and France was a junior official of a court of justice, responsible for acting as an usher in a court, carrying the mace in processions in front of a justice, delivering official notices, making proclamations (as a sort of town crier), and so on. By Shakespeare's day a beadle was a sort of village constable, appointed by the parish to keep order.

Origin of Bee, Meaning of Bee

Origin: One such explanation is that the name BIBBY is matronymic in origin, derived from the first name of a mother. In this case, BIBBY is associatedwith the first name Isabel. Just as Aggy/Aggie (Agnes) became the surname Taggy, IBBY (ISABEL/I'BEL) became the surname BIBBY. Early use of the surname in England includes a man named Dobbe, son of Bibby, who is recorded in the Assize Rolls for Lancashire in 1240. A Robert Bybby is mentioned in the Court rolls of the Manor of Wakefield in 1284. Today the surname is quite rare and is most likely found in Lancashire, Yorkshire and the area of Liverpool. The Blazon of Arms is Azure with three eagles displayed or. The Crest: in front of cubit arm erect, holding a sword in bend sinister proper, a mullet (star) of six points between two escallops (shells) fesseways argent. The scallop meant the knight had been on crusade to the Holy Land.

Origin of Bee, Meaning of Bee

Origin: This surname is probably allusive to the industry of the original bearer, or to the sign of his shop, and is obviously taken from the little insect that is so noted for its energy and speed. Bee as a termination in surnames or names of places of English origin is a corruption of 'by.' Examples showing such corruption are: Holmbee, Battersbee, Bradbee, and Boltbee. There is also an ancient Gaelic name carrying the prefix Mac, with an interesting pedigree from which the name may have been derived. Burke, in his work on heraldry, gives four families of the name in the United Kingdom as having the right to bear arms. One of these coats-of-arms is thus heraldically described: Azure, a chev. between three bees volant or. Crest: A dragon's head or, pierced through with an arrow gules, flighted and pheoned or.

Origin of Bee, Meaning of Bee

Origin: The Coat of Arms born by both the Beeston and Beeson families is the same and is of the ancient family seated at Cheshire at avery early period - blazoned, "Argent, a bend between six bees sable. Crest, on a mount Vert a Castle, or issuing there from an arm embowed brandishing a sword."
Tradition states that the Beesons were of French origin, and that there was an officer in the army of William the Conqueror named Bezon. After the Norman conquest, he became an officer in the Royal Guard. His descendents settled in the Isle of Man, where one of them married a daughter of the ruler of the island. He afterwards returned to Lancashire, where his descendents became numerous and can still be found.
