my great grandfather, John/Jonas Heinrich Thomsen came to this country in the early 1900's from Germany. His date of birth is January 24, 1857 in Witbeckfield, Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and he died December 10, 1937 in Winside, NE. He is buried at Valley View Cemetery in rural, Persia, IA. He was married to Margarethe Hansen in 1879 in Germany. She died in Germany in 1901 and is buried there. They had 8 children: Christine, Alvina, Hans, Margaretha, Mathilde, Johanna, Peter and Emma. They all entered this country through Ellis Island and their destination was Fritz Thomsen (brother of John)in Persia, IA. family of Nico Bohm. He was born in Germany July 20, 1882 and was killed in a farming accident by Winside, Nebraska March 29, 1946. He had one sister, Lucie Bohm Nissen that lived in Minnesota. Amos Benjamin Babcock was a civil war veteran, and died on his farm in Lee county,in the late 1860's his wife's name was Sarah Almira Van Osdle. Amos and Sarah had three children; Charles Ruland,and two daughters,one who's name was Grace. They were farmed out when Amos was killed. Sarah later married a Richard Richardson, from Chicago, they later moved to California Cucamunga. |
The Tansey / Meek Families
The Tansey family originally lived in Surry County, NC. Elijah Tansey married Mahalah Burris and migrated westward to Indiana, settling in the area of Morgan County. Their son, Barclay Elem Tansey, served in the 70th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He married Ellen Grave in Indiana and started a family before moving out to Iowa, making their home in New Providence in Hardin County. His son, and my great grandfather, Roscoe Tansey, moved his wife Martha Mattie (Meek) Tansey and their family to Massachusetts in the early 1900s. The Meek family orginated in Lincolnshire, England. John and his brother Jacob came to America in 1719, settling on the James River in Virginia in. They moved to North Carolina before settling Hagerston, Maryland. John married Nancy DuValle there and his son John also married there. John Meek 3rd moved westward to Shelby in Jefferson County, KY, marrying Margaret Erwin and having most of their children there. They continued on to Wayne County, Indiana where their youngest son Lorenzo Dow Meek was born. Lorenzo was named after a famous itinerant preacher of the time. He married Martha Cary. Their son Irvin Reid Meek served in the 8th Indiana Infantry, having been promoted to full Corporal by the time of his discharge in 1865. Irvin married Sarah Jane Ellis, whose family was from Ohio. They moved frequently showing up in Wisconsin, Indiana and Iowa. Irvin's daughter Martha, who was called Mattie married Roscoe Tansey. Janna L Babcock - InterneTree my father's family, the Martins were from Lewiston, Maine. His mother's maiden name was Dulac. Her mother's maiden name was Arnoldy. Their families came from France to Quebec and Acadia in the 1600's and 1700's. my mother's family, surname Kvernvik. They came from Norway in 1906. Her mother came from Norway around that time also, my grandmother's surname was Mathisen. My husband's family is also from Maine. The Babcock's settled in Bangor. His paternal great grandmother was a decendent of Abraham Somes who settled in Somesville on Mt. Desert Island, Maine, in the late 1700's. My husband's mother's family, the Ernst's came from Brooklyn, New York, and Switzerland.
