Origin: The Barrys came from Wales with the Anglo-Norman invasions in 1170. They soon possessed a vast area of Co. Cork. There were so many Barrys that, to distinguish one from the other, they were known as Barry M?r (the Senior), Barry ?g (the Young), Barry Roe (the Red), Barry Maol (the Bald) and Barry Liadir (the Strong). They aquired titles such as Earl of Barrymore and Viscount of Buttevant. This tipperary town got its name from the Norman French 'boutez-en-avant' ('strike forward'), the rallying cry of the Barrys in their many battles. Like so many of the nobility of the 18th and 19th centuries, the Barrys squandered their money, drinking and gambling until most of their splendid houses were gone. A hunting lodge, Fota Island (in the harbour of the City of Cork) remains, taken over by Cork Univerisity. It is beautifully preserved and the furnishings include many Irish paintings.

Origin: Seibert has it's origins as a Germanic Patronymic name. It has 40 some-odd variations in spelling and pronunciation. It's original spelling came from two root words, 'siege' and 'beraht', meaning 'victorious & brilliant one, famous'. These two words combined, create the earliest common form of 'Siegbert'. Before World War I and during the Austrian Monarchy, it 'became' predominitely a 'Jewish' name, and for that reason was eventually avoided by non- Jews. It is often confused with the more common name of 'Siegfried', which means 'victory & peace'. Names such as these are cate- gorized as the 'victory' names, used to depict terms of battle or warfare.... Siegbert: Victory-Bright Siegfried: Victory-Peace Sigismund/Sigmond: Victory- Mountain These names are now commonly depicted as Seibert, Siefert, Simmonds, & Simon.... As a Jewish name, these are possibly descriptive of the tribe of Simeon(Shimon)... commonly the Jews used the 1st sylabble of a German name to depict the tribe they were thought to be from, in this case the Hebrew letter 'Shin'.

Origin: The Cabaniss Surname's Arrival in America The following is taken from Allen Cabaniss' excellent work, Cabaniss Through Four Generations: Some Descendants of Matthew and George, ?1969, 1970, 1971, Allen Cabaniss: HENRI CABANIS, French Protestant immigrant to Va. and a progenitor of the family in America, appears first on the ship list of the Mary and Ann of London as 'Henri Cabanis, sa femme et un enfant,' among 205 refugees led by Olivier, Marquis de la Muce, and Charles de Sailly, sailing from Gravesend harbor. Capt. George Hawes acknowledged receipt of payment for transportation of those 207 persons on 19 Apr. 1700 (Brock, Huguenot Emigrations, pp.254f.). Also on that list were 'Isaac Chabanas, son fils, et Catherine Bomard' (ibid., p.253), and it is presumed that Isaac and Henri were related (Anderson, Henry Cavinis, pp.403-430). After thirteen weeks at sea the ship arrived at the mouth of James River on 23 July 1700. The royal governor, Col. Francis Nicholson, reported on 12 Aug. (in a letter received in London on 21 Oct.) that the refugees had been located at a place 'about twenty miles above the Falls of James River, commonly called Manikin Town,' a deserted village of the Monacan Indians (ibid., p.252; it is his report that inJoe Cabaniss

Origin: George F?zenbaker, the original Fazenbaker immigrant to America, was among the 'Hessian' soldiers hired by England's King George III to fight against the colonial forces during the American Revolution. George was a private in the 6th Company of the 'Jager-bataillons' (that is, the hunter battalions). To be precise, George was not from that part of Germany known as Hesse, but the term Hessian is customarily applied to all the German soldiers hired by King George. German records show that George was labeled a deserter with full arms and equipment on 4/4/1781. His unit served in Virginia. Western Maryland genealogist Wayne Bittinger noted that 'a history of Germans in the state of Maryland ... reports that he had been taken prisoner of war and had refused return transportation to Germany.' The two accounts, one German and one American, appear to be different perspectives on the same event. George Fazenbaker married Elizabeth ----, who was born in the 1750s or 1760s in Germany. George eventually settled in what is today Garrett County, Maryland. The first known record of the Fazenbaker family in western Maryland was made in 1787, four years after the end of the Revolutionary War.
