Sometime in the latter part of 1868 or the early part of 1869 Carl boarded a ship headed for America. Carl worked aboard the ship, to pay for his passage to America. Carl?s wife did not hear from him for about six months due in part to the length of the voyage. Carl probably landed at the Port of Charleston, South Carolina. Charleston is where his wife, Joehanna Augusta Lahman Audirsch and their baby landed when they reached America in November or December of 1869. This baby was Emile John, their first child, who had been born January 19, 1869. Carl and his family settled in Newberry county, Conner township, South Carolina as indicated by the June 30, enumeration record of the 1870 census. It was here in this area that Bertha, Carl?s daughter, was born on April 15, 1871. Sometime prior to January 1875 Carl moved his family from Newberry county, Conner Township, South Carolina. On January 18, 1875 Carl purchased 54 acres of land for the amount of $540.00 from Caleb Etheredge. This land according to the deed was located on McNarey?s Ferry Road and West Creek in Edgefield County. On March 25, 1875, Gustave Augustus was born.
