The Asplen Family of Dorchester County, Maryland
John Asplund, a baptist minister of some renound. John Asplund was born in Sweden cir 1755. He went to England at the beginning of the Revolutionary War and either enlisted or was drafted into the British Navy. He deserted off the coast of America and made his way to North Carolina where he found religion. He ultimately became a Baptist minister in Virginia. After the Revotion, he returned to Sweden, Finland, Lapland and England for a visit. Upon his return to this country, he set out on a 7,000 mile trip to more than 250 Baptist churches and in 1792 published a book on the Baptist Church in this country. He set out immediately thereafter on a 10,000 mile trip and increased the number of churches visited to 750 and published a revision to his work. To this day, his work is cited in any discussion of the Baptist Chuch in this country prior to 1790. He subsequently settled in Fishing Creek in Dorchester County where he drowned in a conoe accident in 1807 leaving a wife and son. The son, also John Asplund, married a local girl, Harriet Woolford. Whether intentional or not, the name change to Asplen as found in the census of 1830. Thus began the Asplen family of Dorchester County.
