Origin: What's in Your Name? If the present day Garners went on a genealogical hunt, they would go to France to trace the original family roots. The name would be found as Garneau & Garnier. Before it ever became a surname, Garnerius was a popular personal name during the 11th Century. The old French word of 'Germer' meant a storehouse for corn or grain' and the name was given to a man who worked at, or perhaps the keeper of the grainery. The latin 'granum' means 'seed'. The surname came to England from france at the time of the Conquest and is found written originally as Gerner. Geogrey gerner is recorded on Tax Rolls of Essex in 1272. William del Gerner lived in Lancashire, England in 1332.

Origin: There are Irish Foxes and Cambro-Norman Foxes in Ireland. The origins of the Irish Fox name are commonly believed to originate with 11th century Tadhg 'The Fox' O'Catharnaigh, chief of Teathbha (or Teffia), who was apparently clever 'like a fox' in battle as well as in acquiring land. Several Irish annals point to a different story - that in the year 1024 'the men of Teathbha' killed Ireland's chief poet/historian of that era - and that they in turn were killed and left unburied, afterwards acquiring a foul odor. Another version has the killer or killers remaining alive after their evil deed, but forever after carried a foul odor with them (divine retribution). The odor was similar to that of a fox, which has a scent similar to that of a skunk.%0a%0aThis unfortunate story does not carry any more credibility than the first story simply because, in a time period when people might easily change their names to suit their purposes, it is hard to believe subsequent generations would CHOOSE to perpetuate a surname which had socially negative connotations.%0a%0aFor more on the Fox name and Fox history, as well as background to the Cambro-Norman Foxes, see Fox Clan website at the link directly above.

Origin: THE ORIGIN OF OUR SURNAME:
The surname BARNHAM originated in England, and descendants of the immigrant ancestor in North America have also used the spellings BARNAM and BARNUM. The last of these is by far the most common in North America today, while BARNHAM continues to be the most common spelling in England.
Sir Francis Barnham, MP, (1576-1646) discussed in his journal the origin of the surname Barnham. He stated, "Our Name as we have it by tradition, strenghtened with probable circumstances, and some good records (which I have heard some of my friends say they have seene) was first gentilized, or at least advanced, by Sir Walter Barnham, a Baron of the Exchequer in the time of King Richard II, and soe continued in a flowrishinge estate (at a place called Barnham in Suffolke not far from Thetford, where divers descents of them lye now buried) till the time of King Henry VII, all which I have received from my grandmother, father, and uncles, whoe spake it with much confidence, as being delivered to them, by theire friends of the former age, and the truth of it assured by divers records, however it is not that which I will binde on as an infallible truth, because I my self have not seene that which may soe absolutly assure it, and because I for myne owne parte care not to fetch a pedegree farther then from the certaine memory of a grandfather that was rich and honest, and a father that was vertuous and wise;...."
THE MEANING OF OUR SURNAME:
Frank Holmes, in the Directory of the Ancestral Heads of New England Families, calls the name a corruption of Bearnham, meaning a town in a wood or on a hill, and notes that the original family seat was at Southwich, Hants, England. Bardsley, in his Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames, defines it as a location-derived surname meaning "of Barnham," and referring to parishes in Ely, Chichester, and Norwich.
