My family appears to have imigrated from Scotland, Ireland and Germany. William McCleish came to America in 1778. He married Jane Alexander (father Gilbert Alexander. I'm not sure whether they married here or in Scotland. They had 3 children John, James and Jane all born near Murfreesboro, NC. My descendant John (b. 1793), married Eleanor Blythe they settled in Madison County, TN (near Jackson) at a place called Cub Creek?. Their daughter, Martha Ellen McCleish (b. 1842) married Robert Moore Neely (in 1859) who died in the Civil war in 1862. They had 1 child, John Samuel Neely (b. 1860). She remarried Henry C. Spurlock. John Samuel Neely married Mattie Bryan Speight in 1890 in Hunt Co. TX. They had 8 children of which my grandmother Mabel Louise Neely was one. Samuel Armitage was born 27 Jan 1716/17 near Pontefract, Yorkshire, England. He sailed to America in 1738-40 and settled in Bucks County, Solebury Township of Pennsylvania. He married Elizabeth Hambleton(1720 to 1751) and had two sons - James(1749 to 1816) and John(1751 to 1835). His second wife was Mary (Harvey) Simcock and they had 5 children. Their youngest child Amos(1764 to 1847)married Martha Doan(e) and they migrated to Canada in 1804, settling north of Toronto at what is to-day known as Newmarket, Ontario. |

The earlier generations were mainly occupied as Bricklayers, but our third great grandfather Benjamin Arber became a miller and bought his own windmill in the late 1850's at Littleport, Cambridgeshire.
