The Charles Wesley and Annie Bonaparte Baxter HomePage?
William Baxter was born into slavery in Orangeburg, South Carolina in 1840. Although we have yet to confirm his service, some of us believe that William Baxter was a Civil War veteran: the family elders say that his wife Mary Jane (maiden name unknown) tried on more than one occasion to collect his veteran's benefits; lacking appropriate documentation, she was not successful. Although this is not crystal clear in documentation, we possibly are descendants of William's wife Mary Jane, who was born in 1845. I say possibly because Charles's father Isiah Baxter was born around 1860. It's possible that Mary Jane was his mother, although, at the time of Isiah's birth she would have been about 15. We have documented at least 11 other children of William Baxter, some of who died young and some of who are possibly unknown branches of the larger William Baxter Clan. Isiah Baxter married Emma Boyd (I note here that some in the family believe that Emma's maiden name was not Boyd but Cheeseborough. They believe that, after her parents premature demise, young Emma went to live with the Boyds, her Cheeseborough family relatives; she later adopted their name). Both Isiah and Emma died between 1890-1900 of a condition known as dropsie. Isiah and Emma had at least 8 children: Charles, Lemuel, David, Artimus, Mary, Olive, Lonnie, and John. After Isiah and Emma died, the younger children went to live with various relatives. Charles (b. 1878; d. 1954)) married Annie Rebecca Bonaparte (b. 1892; d. 1968) in or near Orangeburg, SC (some say in St. Matthews, SC) in 1912 and migrated North in 1923 to Coatesville, PA. Annie was the daughter of Isaac and Adriana Darby Bonaparte. Annie had four sibblings: Jeremiah, Napoleon, Jin (or Gesee), and Perline. Now over 100 years old, Annie's younger sister, Aunt Perline is still alive. She lives in a care facility in Burlington, NJ. Charles and Annie had 14 children: Alonzo (deceased), Isaac, Rubelle, George (deceased), Belgium (deceased), Emma, Samuel (deceased), John, Ada, Lenore, Solomon, Dorothy, Evelma, and Milton. Descendants of Nathaniel Harriman (Herriman) Ontario, Canada
Nathaniel Harriman was either born in Hadley, MA or Norwich, CT in 1758. He married Bethania Snow in Hardwick, MA in 1781 and they had 9 children. We believe him to be the son of Nathaniel Harriman b. Oct 9, 1723,the brother of Jonathan b. 1753, the grandson of Matthew Harriman born August 16, 1652 and the great grandson of Leonard Harriman. Nathaniel received a land grant of 200 acres near the town of Cobourg, Hamilton Township, Northumberland County, Ontario (then called Hamilton in Upper Canada) on September 1, 1797. He may have been referred to as a Simcoe Loyalist. We have recently added information on his brother, Jonathan who moved from Vermont to Sandy Creek, NY. Diadamia was the youngest daughter of Nathaniel and Bethania. She was reported to be stolen from the lake shore near Cobourg, Ontario by Mississauga Indians on June 7, 1797 just 4 weeks after the family arrived from Rupert, Vermont. A poem written by Bethania entitled The Lost Child was meant to tell her parents, Jesse and Mary Snow,(nee Eaton)in Hardwick, MA, about the loss of Diadamia. Nathaniel, his second son, is the direct line ascendant to the author. He was a well respected person and served in the Provincial Dragoons during the war of 1812 -1815. His younger brother, Luther, was also in the Canadian Militia during that war. Luther then became a physician and was married twice; the first to Sarah White (5 children) (Sarah may have died as a result of childbirth complications) and the second to Abigail Dean. That marriage produced 7 children. Two sons, Weston Leroy and Elbridge also became physicians. After serving on the Union side during the Civil War, as surgeons, they both returned to establish practices in Lindsay, Ontario. Elbridge then moved to Grand Forks, North Dakota some time after 1879. The Harriman History (Feudalism to Freedom)by Lois Ware Thurston, comments on the Harriman Name. The name Harriman was not uncommon in England, suggesting there was no one Harriman family, but several unrelated families with the same name. Some of the earliest Harriman records were found in Uldale and it was only in these records that another Harriman with the Christian name Leonard was found. Uldale is in Cumberland County (the Lake District) in Northern England near the Scottish border (and recent center of the outbreak of foot and mouth disease) There are variant spellings of Harriman, Herriman, Harryman, Herryman, as in those days people often spelt a name the way it sounded. Charles W. Bardsley, author of ?A Dictionary of English and Welsh Surnames?, claims the name Harryman is an occupational name meaning servant of Henry which when spoken sounds like Harry?. When the Harriman?s left Uldale it was likely to find a better way of life, rather than religious freedom. Leonard and John Harriman found themselves caught up in the Great Migration of the 1630's. and arrived with Reverend E Rogers in New England in 1638. They set out from Rawley, Yorkshire, England.
