Origin: Lehrer is a German word meaning teacher. Therefore, the origin must have been occupational. I have traced the family back as far as the seventeenth century (Rhineland , Germany). Lehrer became Lair on 9 July 1799 when Catherine Lehrer signed her last will and testament in Rockingham County, Virginia in the presence of three witnesses. This Anglicizes the German Lehrer to Lair.

Origin: Locals will confirm the mountain is definitely called Monte Caira. Apart from the mountain, there is a small village on the slopes of Monte Caira called Caira. It's administratively part of the municipality of Cassino. The village of Caira if known for its 'festa dei cornuti', or cuckolds' festival (no kidding) which takes place, if I'm not mistaken, in June. The vilage's cuckolds identify themselves by wearing their jackets inside-out, and other villagers given them free wine to drown their sorrows.

Origin of Air, Meaning of Air
Origin: It is said that this name took its origin from a baronial castle near the river Epte, in Normandy; and that this castle had received its name from a devout Englishman who had been a hermit in that neighborhood and suffered martyrdom in the year 884; he was canonized for his virtues and martyrdom, and locally celebrated. The castle received its name only about ten years after his death, and the family were at an early time called St. Clair. There is a railway station near this place, called St. Clere.%0a%0aThe family were of Norse descent, and nearly related to William the Conqueror. In the line of descent stood the Norse prince, Rollo, who came to Normandy and received the province in 912 from King Charles of France. The St. Clairs of the same generation with William were his second cousins in descent from Rollo, and some of these were his first cousins through another connection. Many knights of this blood came with William on his expedition of conquest, there being in his party at least nine of the St. Clair name. There have been many noted St. Clairs in England and Scotland; the name is also found early in Ireland. More than twenty Scotch and at least thirty English families of this name have had grants of arms. The name has reached History of West Virginia

Origin: From Ath, a ford, and dare, from darach, the place of oaks, "The ford of the oaks." There is the following tradition of the origin of this surname: "Thomas, the sixth Earl of Desmond, while on a hunting excursion was benighted, and lost his way, between Tralee and Newcastle, in the county of Limerick, where he was received and hospitably entertained by one William McCormic, whose daughter he subsequently married. At this alliance, the family and clan took umbrage. Resigning his title and estate to his youngest brother, he fled to France in 1418, and died of grief at Rouen, two years afterward. The King of England attended his funeral. He had issue, Maurice and John; Robert, the son of Maurice, returning to Ireland, with the hope of regaining the estates and title of Thomas, his ancestor, slew Gerald, the White Knight, in single combat at Athdare, the ford of the oaks, whence he received the name of Adaire. He embarked for Scotland, where he married Arabella, daughter of John Campbell, Lord of Argyle."

Origin: The surname Carstairs, the name originates from the village Carstairs. In the late 13th Century, the Stewart Earl (Stewarts were at the time nobles ). Were given a large amount of land surrounding St Andrews by the then king. The Earl gave the land to his secretary,to administer on his behalf, a priest named Thomas de carstairs (no surnames in those days for common people - didn`t become the norm untill the 16th century), Thomas having no children imported his family members from the village to take up farms in the area, in turn holding them on his behalf, (the name of the game - even in those days was tax generation, plus a bit of military service) and hence a tribe of Johns, Andrews, and Thomases from Carstairs appeared.

Origin: The surname derives from old irish O'Meachair - meaning is hospital. Known to our family is the turn of phrase Meagher of the Sword. I originate from the Meagher Wedgers - origin is still unknown. Maher is the Englaish version of the name as it is easier to pronounce. The actual pronouncation is Ma' hair or Ma'her and not Mock'er or Meager. In Ireland Meagher originated in Counties Waterford, Tipperary(as in our family). ''Nairs'' are a warrior class (a martial nobility). In this regard, they are similar to the samurai of Japan. The word ''Nair'' is either derived from the Sanskrit word ''Nayaka'' (leader) or ''Naga'' (snakes, which the ''Nairs'' worshipped). The ''Nair'' class name also encompasses ''Menons'', ''Panickers'', ''Kurups'', ''Pillais'', ''Unnithans'', and ''Nambiars''.)

Origin: There are numerous families (bloodlines) with the surname "Hare" and each may have a unique country of origin. The surname may or may not have originated from an English-speaking country. It's origin may have been German as was the case for my family. The German name "Herr" was anglicized to "Hair" after the immigrants arrived in the Colonies. Some descendants chose the spelling "Hare" years later. The soundex is the same for all of them.
