Consisting of two parts: the 'A' refers to the little river Aa (from 'aqua', water) streaming trough the town of Bocholt. Second part, the 'HOLT' refers to Holtz, hout, wood. The name Aholt was created when in or before the 13. century the manor with this name was built near the woods and a branche of the Aa, called the Heggenaa, outside the townwalls of Bocholt in the Bocholter Feldmark.
