Origin: Mahon is a surname common in Ireland. The name is derived from the Gaelic word for 'bear', Brian Boru's older brother was name Mahon. The name therefore is often associated with members of the Cenneadi clan. The most prominant Mahon family was located in Stokestown, and their family estate is now owned by the Irish Government. IT is now the famine museum. The fate of Captain Dennis Mahon, assasinated by his tenants, is a sad part of Irish History. The Mahons owned the largest Anglo Irish Merchant Bank, and were the owners and operators of mines in County Wicklow.
