The Baeckelandts of Glenview Illinois USA
Edmond DUPON (1877-1947) first came to America in June 1902, following his younger brother Joseph who arrived May 6, 1902. Both brothers had earlier that year been living first in South Africa and then London. They originally hailed from Ichteghem W.VL. When they first arrived they worked on the farm of the WELVAERTS who lived in moline and may have been distantly related. Later they moved to Chicago and found work as laborers in the stockyards. In 1905 they both married women from Belgium, ED married Pharilde Marie VERHELLE (Ichteghem 1883-1937) and they had 4 children, the first three born in Chicago. The last one, Prosper DUPON (Ichteghem 1913 - 2000) was born after they returned to Ichteghem in late 1912. During the war Pharilde and her 3 youngest children fled the German advance (in August 1914) together with her mother Eugenie VANMAELE and stepfather Peter VERSTRAETE. They spent the period 1914 to 1919 in a castle in Harwick, Scotland with approximately 40 other Belgian refugees. Not long after their return to Belgium Edmond DUPON again left for Chicago (October, 1922). He was followed by his oldest son (Hilaire Vilaire DUPON 1906-1963) and his second son Edmond DUPON Jr. (1908-1995) in 1930. ED Sr. brewed prohibition beer in his tub, worked as a janitor, and may have been involved in other grey areas of the economy since by 1937 he had acquired rental properties a substantial bank account ( $2000 in savings) and other trappings of middle class affluence. Recall that 1937 was the midst of another severe depression and ED's official source of employment was as a flat janitor (as many Chicago Belgians were). Following her mother's Pharilde's death in May 1937 my grandmother Elisabeth Mary DUPON (Chicago 1911-1981) and her husband Julien Joseph BAECKELANDT (Koekelare 1904-1975) and son Werner Julien BAECKELANDT (Ghent 1936 - ) emigrated to America (September 3, 1937).
