GENEALOGY OF THE MIAMI ACKERMANS
This is the genealogy of the family of Loyd Lester Ackerman and Clare Steinhart Ackerman who raised seven children in Miami, Florida beginning in 1931.\r\n\r\nThe family of Loyd Ackerman of Mount Gilead, Ohio and Mable Selzer Ackerman of Akron, Ohio moved to Miami, Florida in 1918 in the height of the influenza epidemic of that year. Two weeks after arriving in Miami, Loyd died of complications of the flu and left Mabel Ackerman, with her family of five young children, to cope at the new location by herself.\r\n\r\nWe don\t yet know whether her father, Michael Selzer, and mother, Susie Wolfe Selzer, were already in Miami, or that they may have moved there shortly thereafter. Either way, Michael and Susie were some of the early Miami residents and Michael built many homes in Miami, particularly around the Coconut Grove area, in the 1920s and 1930s. Michael had been a building contractor in Akron. He was in his late 50s in 1918, so we suspect that the building he did was partly to help support the Ackerman children.\r\n\r\nFor a short time in the 1930s, Michael's brother, Lawrence and his wife Augusta lived in Miami. Pictures, sent from Miami, of side by side houses were marked: Uncle Michael's and Mable's houses. Those houses were acrossLOYD ACKERMAN |
