Origin: Donnachaidh is one of the oldest Scottish clans, arriving in Scotland from Irish Picts anywhere from 40-90 AD. My particular surname, Donachy, I have been told is a 'hideout' name members of the clan took after Culloden in 1746. Being a Highland Clan, we were not on the winning side that day. Go to www.tartans.com for a good overview history. The clan is listed under the great hall. It's also known as Clan Robertson. I'm sure what I'm telling you, you already know about. If any info on the name Donachy could be shared, I'd greatly appreciate it. There's not too many of us :)

Origin: There are Irish Foxes and Cambro-Norman Foxes in Ireland. The origins of the Irish Fox name are commonly believed to originate with 11th century Tadhg 'The Fox' O'Catharnaigh, chief of Teathbha (or Teffia), who was apparently clever 'like a fox' in battle as well as in acquiring land. Several Irish annals point to a different story - that in the year 1024 'the men of Teathbha' killed Ireland's chief poet/historian of that era - and that they in turn were killed and left unburied, afterwards acquiring a foul odor. Another version has the killer or killers remaining alive after their evil deed, but forever after carried a foul odor with them (divine retribution). The odor was similar to that of a fox, which has a scent similar to that of a skunk.%0a%0aThis unfortunate story does not carry any more credibility than the first story simply because, in a time period when people might easily change their names to suit their purposes, it is hard to believe subsequent generations would CHOOSE to perpetuate a surname which had socially negative connotations.%0a%0aFor more on the Fox name and Fox history, as well as background to the Cambro-Norman Foxes, see Fox Clan website at the link directly above.

Origin: There are several names in this country of like pronunciation, and only slightly diverse spelling, Yokum, Yocum, Yoakum, Joachim, and perhaps others, which it seems probable are of common Swedish origin. It is reasonable to suppose that all bearing these names are descendants of one ancestor.%0a%0aOne of the almost forgotten chapters of modern and American history concerns the short-lived effort of Sweden to be a colonizing power. In the early days after the discovery of America, the active days of English, Spanish, French, and Dutch enterprise in exploration and expansion, Sweden also sought to have a part in the unfolding possibilities of empire. Their military power and energy were not equal to permanent and successful conduct of the enterprise, but New Sweden once lay near the Delaware, and several remains of this short-lived Swedish colony are still to be found in Delaware and in Philadelphia. To this part of history the present family owes its American transplantation.%0a%0a(I) Peter Joachim, the founder of this family, came from Sweden, and helped to establish the Wicaco settlement, near Philadelphia, several years before the coming of William Penn, when the country along the Delaware was New Sweden. After Penn laid out his city History of West Virginia
