Ancestors & Descendents of Roy and Carol Abramowitz
1. Bentze Abramowitz's grandson, my grandfather, Woolf Joseph Abramowitz was born in 1882 and lived in Panevezys, Lithuania. He later moved to King William's Town, South Africa. (Much of the information in this tree is thanks to a labor of love by Nathan Abramowitz, Toronto, Canada.)\r\n\r\n2. Moshel Gorzder (Preiss), born in 1784 and died in 1869. He was a wealthy flax merchant of Gorzd, from which town he took his surname when the law required all Jews to furnish one. He had 10 sons and 4 daughters! One son was Joseph or Jossel. He changed his name to Preiss. \r\n\r\n3. Ephraim (Klein)Greenblatt, born about 1860 was from Popolan, Lithuania. He had a brother and two sisters in the USA. One brother changed his name to Goldberg.\r\nEphraim came from Popalan, Lithuania (at that time it was in Russia), to Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He was a pot re-silverer and shammus of the Raleigh Street Shul in P.E.\r\nHis wife, Freida Sain arrived a few years later. The family came to S.Africa via Leeds.\r\nThe Raleigh Street Shul in P.E. has been made into a national monument and the family contributed to a plaque in Ephraim's name. \r\n\r\n4. Yesel Zeiv Davidson was born in ? around 1847 and died in Port Elizabeth, South Africa in 1940. One of hisRoy & Carol Abramowitz |
