Origin: The surname comes out of the old Celtic church. In the celtic church it was not forbidden for priests to marry and many a second son of a noble family inherited the position of abbot of a monestary. The most prevalent branch of the name comes from the scottish and belongs to the siol alpine. The scottish line of kings. Branches of the framilies spread rapidly over the countries of Ireland,Scotland,France and britain, Usually transplanted by wars between these countries and by alliances. The name is to be found in the dooms day book,(the first english census) conducted by Willian the conquerer in 1066. The celtic church was eventually replaced by the Roman church but roots to that celtic past live and religion live on in the name of Abbott.
