Charles Davis 1824-1914, founder of Charles Davis Ltd
Thomas Davis was born in St.Pancras, Middlesex in 1802 and married Ann Young born in St.Martins, Middlesex in 1803. They had eight children; Emma b1821, Thomas b1821, Charles b1824, Ann b1826, William b1828, Martha b1830, Sarah b1833 and Eliza b1836. They were living in 1841 and 1851 at 7 Hart Street, St.George Hanover Square and Thomas Snr. was listed as a Carriage lamp maker. At the age of about seventeen, Charles Davis was caught robbing a till; as a first offender he was dealt with reasonably leniantly, and served three months in gaol. After his release he was caught stealing a silk handkerchief. In the eyes of the authorities he was now a habitual petty thief, and on the 5th of April 1841, he was sentenced to transportation for ten years. While waiting for his sentence to be carried out, Charles spent ten months in a hulk, a ship moored offshore and used as a gaol. Then, on the 2nd of April 1842 the Candahar set sail from Spithead and arrived in Hobart on the 20th July 1842 with 249 male convicts. This is where the story of Charles Davis really begins. It is the story of a man who in 1847, on his release, set up a small tinsmithing workshop. By hard work and astute management, this grew into the hardware empire, Charles Davis Ltd, selling many items made in the greatly expanded workshops, and importing goods from all round the world. Charles Davis remained in charge until 1911, and only then, at the age of eighty-seven, passed control to his sons; Charles Jnr and Alfred Thomas. Marrying five times, he fathered twelve children, had thirty-two grandchildren, sixty-two great-grandchildren and founded a business which was to become 'one of Australia's oldest and most successful companies'. Ancestors of Archibald McNeil, of Branford and New Haven, CT
ancestors of Archibald McNeil, who lived in Milford, Branford and New Haven, CT, and his father, Charles McNeil of Ballycastle, County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The family was originally from Scotland, but emigrated to Northern Ireland for at least one generation before coming to America. Charles had a close relative named Archibald McNeil (probably his brother, but possibly a first cousin), presumed to have lived in Ballycastle. They and their spouses died in a ship wreck at Sable Island, off the coast of Nova Scotia, in July of 1737. It is not known if they had ever been to America on a previous voyage. All family records were lost in the ship wreck. My direct line is through Samuel McNeil, fifth son of Archibald McNeil and Mary Russell. most of the ancestors of Archibald and Mary's first son, also named Archibald McNeil. middle son John, b. in 1745. he moved to Amenia Precinct, in Dutchess County, NY. He is listed as living there in 1778, at least. |

The Beatys and Littles of Ireland and India
BEATY I am researching the BEATY family, originally from Ireland. From family folklore Francis BEATY was born in Tullamore, Ireland in 1757 . Francis and his wife Catherine gave birth to three sons, John, Francis and Henry, probably in Stoke Damerel, Devon, while he served in the Royal Navy. In 1820 Francis and 1821 Henry, joined the Honourable East India Company Army as Cadets in Bengal, India. The elder son of Francis, named Francis Henry BEATY, and his wife Caroline Ophelia (n?e Sheels), had fifteen children all born in India. Five of the sons served in the Indian Police. The Beaty family finally left India in 1948. The cities in India and Pakistan that feature in the family history are Lahore, Jhansie, Karachi, Landour, Mussoorie, Quetta, Rawlpindi and Simla. LITTLE/LYTTLE I am also researching the LITTLE/LYTTLE family from Northern Ireland. In 1839 Andrew LITTLE was born in the Parish of Montiaghs, Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, to Thomas and Mary (n?e Wilson) LITTLE. In 1858 he joined the 27th Inniskilling Regiment and sailed to India. He remained in India and retired from the army in 1894. He died in Dehra Dun, India in 1926. He had five children Mary Anne, Thomas Wilson, William John (my grandfather) Edward and Andrew. The surname spelling changed to LYTTLE with the children. The cities in India/Pakistan that feature in the family history are Dehra Dun, Jhansie, Karachi,Lahore, Meerut, North West Province,Peshawar and Simla.
